Luncheon Fundraiser For David Leyton

Greetings colleague in drug policy reform. You are receiving this message because at some point in life our paths have crossed and I know you believe that the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act (MMMA) passed by the voters in 2008 is a massive step in the right direction.

For better or worse however, nothing is static in the political world. As a result, our community is facing a very serious threat to the MMMA and everything we have fought for, for so many years. You can even call it a "worst nightmare."

Specifically, "Judge" Bill Schuette, the man who led the opposition to the MMMA in 2008 is now the Republican Party nominee for Michigan Attorney General. Some of you may remember the lurid TV commercials his effort produced back then, showing thuggish young male medical mj "patients" scoring reefer at a California "dispensary" and pushing an elderly woman out of their way as they rushed off to get "high,"-- and a somber voiceover suggesting this is the fate that awaited Michigan citizens should the MMMA be approved.

There is no mystery as to where Mr. Schuette stands. During the course of the campaign to date he has repeatedly proclaimed is disdain for the law and suggested when he is elected he will have things "under control." (use your imagination as to what that means).

Some say there is no difference between Democrats and Republicans, but we beg to disagree on this issue. The Democratic Party nominee, Gennessee County Prosecutor David Leyton has repeatedly, in public and in private, expressed his support for the voters decision. The difference between these two could not be more brutally clear.

On October 11, some of us will be hosting a luncheon fundraiser for David at a private residence in Bloomfield Township. Cost to attend is $250. We have unconditionally promised David Leyton that his campaign will walk out the door that day with $10,000+ Two persons in our group believe $250 is not enough and are good for $1,000. Ditto for some others who are good for $500. To date current pledges exceed $9,000.

Can you please help put the community way over the top on this? $20,000 for David is not out of the question if we all pull together. This race is very close and current polling indicates Schuette is slightly in the lead at the moment. WE CAN CHANGE THAT.

If you cannot visit with David on that day, please consider sending a contribution of any amount, payable to "Leyton for Attorney General." You can send the check to my address below.
Or If you prefer, you can send the money directly to Leyton HQ: Leyton for AG, 503 Mall Ct, #287, Lansing, MI 48912, Attn: Michelle. Please mark "MMMA" in the memo section of your check, so David will know your dollars are coming directly from our community.

In closing, as a political science student over three decades ago, we were required to read the classic political treatise "The Prince" by Niccolo Machiavelli. In this classic of political wisdom, and entire chapter was devoted to the question "Is it better to be Loved or Feared" if one is to rule. The answer overall: it is better to be feared then loved. Let us all send a message to persons like Bill Schuette, Maybe then, mutual respect can lead to the change we all desire...

Please pass this message on to anyone who may be receptive. Let me know if you need further details about anything.

Best Wishes,

Upcoming Rallys October 2Nd/7Th

Folks mark these dates in your calendar. We have our unity rally on the 2nd at the Gone Wired in Lansing at 12:00 noon. We're going to have representation from all the major groups in the state. Our primary focus will be unification on issues like the election, distribution systems, and planning for the protest on October 7th in support of the victims of the Oakland County Massacre. We had a patient die as a result of police action as well as other patients were brutalized. We must show the government that we are resolute in our determination to protect patients and the letter and intent of the law. Stay tuned for further details. It is important that we all put our differences aside and push back against the machine that is trying to overthrow the will of the people.

Stay tuned to the website for more details. We're at the end of the protest season, so a good turnout for both of these events is essential. Thanks for all you do! BB
