Hello everyone, First off, I have stopped using pot after 35 years of smoking for non medical reasons but, a friend of mine who just got his card told me about his caregiver. And what he told me does not sound right - the caregiver is a man and his wife is also a caregiver operating out of the same house told my friend that last year (2009) they made $500,000 being caregivers. Then I asked how much did they pay in taxes, he laughed and said "they don't pay taxes". My question's to you are- 1.Is it possible for two caregivers to make half a million dollars legally in a year? 2. Should'nt a legal business pay taxes? 3. If what they're doing is illegal, does'nt this type of thing give the business a black eye? Please help me understand and thanks for dropping bye.

Don't know about the earnings per year, but it certainly is illegal to not pay taxes on earned income and YES it gives the "business" a black eye ...IMHO.

 

It was my understanding that a care giver should not be charging any more than the cost of set up, raising and maintaining the plants. I could be wrong but that was my understanding.

Consider these possible numbers.

 

To gross 500K would mean producing MMJ for nothing and selling 1000 ounces to ten patients at $500/ounce. Each patient would get one-hundred ounces a year or one ounce every three days.

 

Possible? Well maybe. Likely? Not so likely.

 

Probably nothing is more indicative of the fallacious scenario posted than two characteristics often posted on this site. First, finding ten patients with $50,000 to spend on MMJ in a year is not that easy. Simply consider how many patients have difficulties budgeting even an extra $100-200 for the yearly physician certification.

 

Secondly, please note the number of caregivers offering services to patients. With roughly 10,000 patients and 5,000 registered caregivers, there are plenty of slots open for patients. While some caregivers might ask dispensary prices, most I know consider their service as more an act of kindness and not an income producing endeavor.

 

In short, the only growers making $500,000 a year are going to be illegal and running hundreds of plants. Good luck to them.

No way to do that legally, as outsideinthecold said you are looking at 10 patients spending $961 each every week. In theory it's possible but not plausible, you would have to find someone who not only is willing to drop a grand a week on it but uses 2 ounces a week, and then 9 more people just like that.

I will not ever butt into my CGs business. I don't care what he does,or who he does it with,that is none of MY business. As long as everything is good with us,and LEGAL, I really don't care.When and if MJ ever does become legal,I'm sure the govt will be all over it for tax revenue. Heck thats probably the only reason they will legalize it. MW

I know of some black market weight cannabis dealers who dont make that kind of money this is bullchit plain and simple.

 

Let them brag all they want that distracts police from hassling the true patients and caregvivers who are here to help each other and not get filthy rich off the sick and dying.
