haha, you are not kidding my friend. that's one of the joys of all this from my point of view. getting a newer grower to experience the stretch is always fun. not as fun as harvest, but still fun :) you just NEVER know :) (unless you know)

Thanks for the perpetual schedules, bubblegrower, I'm working on starting something similar. I had been thinking about 6 vegging plants and 6 flowering, harvesting one every 10 days or so (10 days for an even spread of 6 flowering plants over a 60 day flower cycle). That way they get a very long veg cycle, and I flower a smaller number of large plants.

Are you suggesting a ratio more like 5 in veg. and 7 in flower? 4 veg. and 8 in flower?

I'm sure this depends a lot on the strain, vegetative growth speed, flowering stretch, room size, etc. Just wondering if there is a general guideline.

Also wondering how to best step into a perpetual cycle, starting from where I am now. I now have 12 plants from seed, same age, just starting flower. Also have 12 clones, one for each flowering plant, just rooting now (my limit just changed to 24 plants, don't worry...). I think what I'll do is first wait to identify males, then get rid of the male flowering plants and the matching male clones. Then I'll have something less than 12 plants flowering. Then put one of the (smallish) clones in to flower every ten days or so. At first I'll have a large harvest, all the initial plants maturing at once. After that, though, it should move into perpetual mode.

The only problem I foresee there is that the first 'perpetual' plants harvested will have been put into flower at quite a young age, not getting as much veg. time as later sisters will.

Is there a better way to step into the perpetual routine?

it sounds like you have it figured out. i tried to follow your timeline with you and i think i see what you mean. personally, i would WAIT, rather than RUSH. do what you gotta do and get the males out........... you cant do anything until then. no such thing as a perpetual grow with males in the mix. not in our legal conditions anyways. so after the males are out, THEN sit back and calculate things. i would wait until the space is open to do it right, rather than rush a plant around just to try to get on schedule.

thats just me, but being perpetual is a wonderful thing.......... when done right. and that means sticking to the schedule 100%. if you can't, then don't ;)

i'm sure you already know jipo, but for those who don't, "fimming" was an accidental discovery. a grower went to top his plant and mis-cut. the effect was crazy. according to high times mag and old growers lore, the original grower wanted the pruning method to be known as "f*ck i missed" (FIM)......... and the word fimming was born :)

 I've heard it means flower I missed but I never knew the background!! I prefer to fim, I just demonstrated these on a local CG's plants to show him the difference about 3 days ago, and he said the topped plant he can see taking off in 2, he's not sure how much growth will shoot out of the fim yet, I've been as lucky as to get 6 nodes on a fim.

i have never been a big fan of fimming. i will top once at most, but no fimming.

AIR LAYERING

ITEMS NEEDED:

matchstick or toothpick

tape

razor blade

rooting hormone (Clonex)

tweezers

plastic wrap

scissors

pin

(1)Sterilize all tools before using them.

(2)Cut a branch that is at least 1/8 inch thick with at least two nodes.

(3)Select area from which roots will sprout. This area needs to be midway up the main stem, with enough room on each side of the cut to fasten the bag.

(4)Use the Razor Blade to make a 1-2" lengthwise incision along the stem. Cut all the way through the bark, to which the phloem is attached. Don't cut into the xylem, which is the layer under the bark.

(5) A ring of bark is removed from around the stem. The phloem and cambium are attached to the inside of the bark, so when the bark is removed the phloem is also removed. This leaves the central cylinder of xylem and upward water flow unaffected.

(6)Get clonex and apply it to the exposed xylem. For increased stability, you may tape a toothpick or matchstick parrallel to the stem.

(7)With thumb get some grow medium. (perlite, peatmoss, whatever) Pack the wound carefully with the soil.

(icon_cool.gifAttach plastic wrap below incision with tape. Tape the vertical seam where the ends meet. The effect of this should be a funnel shaped plastic wrap enclosure.

(9)Pack with grow medium. Be sure to leave enough "slack" at the top so that it may be taped to the stem above the incision.

(10)Fasten closed with tape.

(11)Use pin to create holes in around bag. This will allow soil to breath.

Use an eye dropper to keep the soil wet. Do this every day. After 2 weeks, your cutting will have roots and will be ready for propagation.

I like that air layering post. I think that it is a great method for patients with limited plant counts. Air layers can be rooted with out increasing plant numbers. Well until you cut the air layer off of the plant. I like using the rock wool cubes. I find that a check for moisture once or twice a week is all that is needed. I also don't remove any "bark" I just make a few cuts lengthwise barely piercing the branch and brush on some Clonex.

I started these air layers while the plant was in flower showing me sex. Since they were already rooted they came out of flower way better than if they were trying to make roots at the same time. Now this air layer clone is a nice little bush. She has branches coming off her branches that have branches. There are so many bud sites. It is crazy.

Guest Wayne

Need some input. Received a 3' mother, have no idea what times of day the 18 hr light cycle ran. Don't have a light but have a secure greenhouse. Opinions of what will happen if I switch to daylight schedule now? Plan on taking clones in a day or two.

Some of the branches split off into multiple tops. The picture just shows one part of one of the main top branches. Will her having this many bud sites be a problem? Or is it a good thing?

I have two of them too. :D
