Lansing's proposed medical marijuana ordinance has been split into two separate measures, with both prohibiting certain activities within 1,000 feet of schools, colleges and other facilities.

Both zoning ordinances - one that would allow administering of medical marijuana as a home occupation and another that would establish compassionate care centers as a safe harbor for the seriously ill - have weeks more of discussion before they land before the Lansing Planning Board.

The Home Occupation ordinance, based on rules being circulated in both East Lansing and Grand Rapids, states that no person shall be allowed to grow or store medical marijuana within 1,000 feet of a public or private elementary or secondary school, public or private colleges or universities, or a playground.

The other ordinance also establishes the same necessary distance between those facilities and compassionate care centers, which are defined as non-residential establishments "where marijuana is used, grown, stored or dispensed." Both also ban activities within 100 feet of public or private youth center, public swimming pool or video arcade facility.

"You've got to put a number (on it)," Councilwoman Carol Wood said, noting that 1,000-foot distances also are mentioned in federal marijuana legislation.

The legislation did not phase medical marijuana proponents. "That's a good distance," said Ryan Basore, co-founder of the Capital City Caregivers.

No it is NOT "a good distance." That rule breaks the medical marijuana law. Therefore it is very very bad.

"You've got to put a number on it" Pure BS .. there is no reason that you have to break this law by your petty efforts. Get your petty laws out of my body!

So if a neighbor home schools and is anti cannabis?

I home schooled for nine years and I did not have a school. It has always been a home. Taxes and every other thing about my home remained as a home, not school. It shouldn't be a problem. Home schoolers as a general rule do not want government interference in their lives and that is one very good reason to opt out of institutional schooling. :)

He was misquoted in the article. He had a 20 minute interview, and that's the only thing they put in the article and it's not even something he said.

The media takes things said out of context.

I'm only speaking of personal experience though.

I'm not a fan of C.W. either and Dunnings is a crook too.

Also, even if the proposed "as the crow flies" distance passes,

will I be in violation medicating in my own home, since I

live across the street from a playground (but, not a school)?

Cripes, aren't there some REAL criminals to be dealt with?!

pollutitions...(yep, misspelled on purpose) nuff said.

*Remember to get educated about our elected officials.

Primaries are around the corner in Aug. then, Nov.

will be upon us. Our time to be heard... again!

peace all

This is really crummy reporting. This particular reporter is notorious for out of context quotes in this arena, there were many errors in her Dr. articles.

Councilwoman Woods really was asking for a cap on the number of members a Compassionate Care Center should have, not perimeter restrictions, the 1000ft wasn't challenged.

Get a good map of almost any city, mark each school, use a compass to mark 1000 scale feet around each school. I bet you don't find many spaces where you could grow, posses or store MMJ in that city. Just treat us like the sex offenders we are.

Why does the # of members be of concern at all... because there is strength in #'s?

Why should federal legislation come into the discussion at all?

I read somewhere that someone somewhere here in MI was/is proposing a limit

to how many people could "visit" any given caregiver in a day... I think the #

was 8 persons per day. Now, how is it "they" could limit how much company

a person can have each day? Correct me if I'm wrong please.

And I believe that it's from the property line of the school .. not the center of the building.

I can understand establishing a "free zone" for businesses. Most cities have zoning restriction for liquor stores and bars. A like zone for marihuana business and compassionate care centers are fair. In addition, these centers will likely be found in non-residential locations, or areas not zoned as residential, i.e. someone home.
