How To Produce Feminized Marijuana Seeds

I came across this while surfing the web. I found it very informing. Please forgive me if this is the wrong place to post. I am new here.

How to produce feminized marijuana seeds

Creating feminized marijuana seeds is an art, there are a few different methods of application. I have written about some of my different methods of making cannabis seeds in previous HIGH TIMES articles.

I have use gibberellic acid, light stress, ph stress, and fertilizer stress to force my plants to make marijuana seeds. All these methods are harsh on the plants, and some like the gibbrellic acid, are not organic. In my search for cleaner more earth-friendly ways of working with the cannabis plant, I have found a new way to make feminized cannabis seeds.

Feminized seeds occur as a result of stress, other than genetics. All cannabis plants can and will make male flowers under stress. Certain strains like a higher PH, some like a lower one. Some like a lot of food, some like a lot less. There is quite a lot of variety in marijuana genetics, and you can't treat every plant the same way.

It takes many harvests before you really get to know a particular strain. Just like getting to know human friends, it takes time. I have grown strains for a decade and am truly getting to know every nuance the different plants exhibit. I can recognize them from a distance. I must say that I get a lot of help from my friends, both in making marijuana seeds and learning new and better ways of working with this sacred plant. I named this new method "Rodelization" after a friend who helped me realize and make use of this way of creating female cannabis seeds. After growing crop after crop of the same plant in the same conditions, I noticed that if I flowered the plants 10-14 days longer than usual, they would develop male "bananas". A male banana is a very slight male flower on a female marijuana plant that is formed because of stress. Usually they do not let out any pollen early enough to make marijuana seeds, but they sometimes do. They are a built in safety factor so in case of sever conditions, the plant can make sure that the species is furthered. To me a male banana is quite a beautiful thing.

It has the potential of making all female pot seeds. Many growers out there have male banana phobia. They see one and have heart palpitations, they want to cut down the entire crop or at least take tweezers and pluck the little yellow emerging devices out. I call them "Emergency Devices" because they emerge at times of stress. In the Rodelization method, the male banana is very valuable. After growing your female plant 10-14 days longer than usual, hang them up to dry, then carefully take them off the drying lines and inspect for bananas. Each and every banana should be removed and placed in a small bag labeled very accurately. These sealed bags can be placed in the fridge for one to two months and still remain potent. For the second phase you need to already have a crop that's already 2 ½ weeks into flowering. Take your sealed bag of pollen out of the fridge, and proceed to impregnate your new crop of females. To do this, you must first match the female plant and the pollen from the same strain in the previous crop.

Shut down all the fans in the grow room. Then take a very fine paint brush, dip it in the bag of pollen, and paint it on the female flower. Do this to each different strain you have growing together. I have done it with ten different kinds in the same room with great success. I use the lower flowers to make weed seeds, leaving the top colas seedless for smoking. This method takes time(two crops), but is completely organic and lets you have great quality smoke at the same time you make your female cannabis seeds. If you're one of those growers that has never grown marijuana seeds for fear of not having something good to smoke, you will love this method. You can also use this pollen to make new female crosses by cross pollinating. The older females with the bananas can be brought into the room with the younger, un-pollinated females when they are three weeks into flowering. Turn all of the circulation fans on high, and the little bits of pollen will proceed to make it around the room. Do this for several days. Six to seven weeks later you will have ripe 100% female seeds; not nearly as many as a male plant would make, but enough to start over somewhere else with the same genetics. As a farmer who has been forced to move his genetics far away from where they started, I know very well the value of seeds. My friend Adam from THSeeds in Amsterdam has a motto that I love to borrow these days: "Drop seeds not bombs".

Thanks nice read...I agree with Tarzan, breeding is an art. Something I will not try.

I just want to align myself with good breeders like Tricloud and Dr. G and other reputable ones. Using them takes the guess work out of the genetics and gets you off on a good start growing.

Its great that we have access here in Michigan of some top notch gentics

So does this method increase/ decrease or do nothing to the tendency of any progeny to become hermaphroditic? I had read that the only plants one might want to use for the creation of feminized seeds should be from plants that had the least tendency to become hermaphroditic? This was supposedly done to try to reduce the introduction of genes promoting that tendency. So what is your scientific take on that?

The method of over maturing plants is used by a number of reputable breeders, such as soma seeds. Since the plant has a tendency to hermy in post maturity and not during the regular growing season, this is the trait that is likely to be passed on. Though just as with regular seeds, every offspring is not an exact copy of the parents and may hermy in regular season just like any other plant from any type of seed.

All cannabis is capable of being a hermaphrodite. If a plant is forced to hermaphrodite, the offspring will likely hermaphrodite if they experience the same condition. So feminized seeds from light stress will turn hermy if the experience light stress. Those that hermy because of fertilizer stress will tend to produce offspring that hermy during feeding stress. And those who hermy 14 days after maturity will tend to produce offspring that hermy 14 days after maturity. There are exceptions though.

Indica Jones are you having problems at home? Because I cannot figure out why you seem to get over my case for someone wanting people to know that they should handle a substance with great care. I did not say anything about transferring it with the pollen. You think people don't spill things? Ever? Some substances in minute quantities are very bad for the human body, while others are not. You think people never screw up and transfer small amounts of something onto their fingers and then onto their food or their children's food? You think people should be in the dark? I did not say one should not engage in the feminizing technique described, if a person chose to. People here can do what ever they do but they should know as much as they can about how to handle something safely.

One thing I have noticed here is some people seem to hate any kind of scientific inquiry if it does not match up with what they want to believe. I ask a legit question about genetics and I get called names. No answers just name calling. Back to the schoolyard!

Be careful sodium thiosulfate is a carcinogen. If I recall correctly ingestion of it causes stomach cancer.

Thanks2 I appreaciate what you said but it does not fall under scientific proof.

You are correct mrd, it is not. Since cannabis is illegal, good studies are hard to come by. There is anecdotal evidence though. Those who grow soma seeds know they are no more prone to hermy than the strain itself is. You know as a breeder how genetic traits are passed on, more anecdotal. The basic concept of genetic traits being passed on is scientific fact. The female plant becomes a male, so the pollen produced is no different than pollen a 100% male produces, with the exception that 100% of the pollen does not carry the male chromosome. Though I will never claim to be an expert, because I am not, I do have a Masters of Science. So I am not speaking in total ignorance.

There is a few studies out there sited in the popular grow books, but they are not exactly peer reviewed and they are limited in scope. They claim there may be a very small increase in odds of getting a hermaphrodite, if any increase. Since the difference is small and the study only includes a small population the variation is not statically significant enough to conclude the increase odds of getting a hermaphrodite. The studies uses chemical stressed plants, not this particular method.

Feminized seeds are only as good as the breeder.

The problem is that for many years breeders made bunk feminized seeds from environmentally stressed plants, so they were likely to hermy. Or breeders use a plant that is prone to hermy in the first place. Also, many breeders use the pollen to "self" the plant, which can bring out recessive traits, both good and bad.

No sir. You stated ingest which means to swallow, eat, or consume. Nothing about spilling. And if you were reading the whole thing which you did not! I state and repeat what is already printed

Wear gloves while mixing and using these chemicals, and mix and use in a properly ventilated area. A mask will prevent the breathing of any dust, which is caustic. STS is colorless and odorless, and poses minimal health risks if used as described here. (See material safety data sheet links below). Note that silver nitrate and STS can cause brown stains upon drying, so spray over newspaper and avoid spilling.

Indica, have you ever tried the colloidal silver method? I find it interesting because colloidal silver is taken by some people for health benefits, so less caution is needed.

  • 1 year later...

old hippies know lots of ways to get a plant to 'pop' a seed--

and it's usually fem if it does---usually

every method requires to stress the plant to get it to self replicate---pop a seed

one of the easiest I've seen is to take a bic lighter and burn the crap out of a bottom branch---burn it till its black by the stalk

my friend is a breeder and uses a little plumbing torch

it's not gonna die

it's hard to kill this stuff...that's why it's classified a 'weed'

it's self replicating and will proliferate if left alone in the right climate/conditions

usually you can achieve results this way--

or I have seen people leave their plants in smaller pots until they are extremely--note EXTREMLY root bound and keeping them under 24hr cycle for as long as possible and wen u switch to 12/12 they will usually pop one--

extreme stress thru environmental conditions--

not sure if these will work on hydro---this is and out door learned method for me but have done it inside

you can use a garbage can out side to control the amount of light--

people also sex their plants this way

I have also seen experienced growers cover bottom branches and diminish light to get a seed--

I have seen many many large outdoor plants that have thick shading in regards to bottom branches produce a seed also--lots of times

it's the light difference from the top to the bottom of the plant and the bottom reacts differently---

in full term plants...not cuttings

like the article says wen the plant perceives danger to its life it will do everything to survive including produce male pre-flowers that can self pollinate

also chk out Dutch 12/12 no mercy method of forcing females from seeds--

keep it organic and clean

well it just so happens i have a little plumbing torch----anyone done this 'technique' of producing feminized

seeds?  I have 'flash babylon' (northern lights) from Samsara Seeds (indica x ruderalis) that is a 65 day auto.  today is day 42.  is this the day to grill and charcoal a bottom branch and get a bunch of fem seed?
