Romulus woman's marijuana-laced cookies put co-worker in hospital

ANN ARBOR — A woman found guilty of handing out marijuana-laced cookies that sickened co-workers in late 2008 is expected to be sentenced Feb. 28, according to a published report.

Bonnie Archibald, 58, of Romulus reportedly asked a friend to bake chocolate chip cookies and add marijuana, thinking it would be funny to pass them out at work, Ann Arbor.com reports.

Two of her co-workers at Margolis Nursery got sick, the reports says, and one was hospitalized for four days.

Archibald pleaded guilty Tuesday in 14A District Court to two counts of aggravated assault and battery in connection with the Nov. 7, 2008, incident.

A woman has been convicted of giving marijuana-laced cookies to two unsuspecting coworkers at a Superior Township nursery more than three years ago, making one of them ill.

Bonnie June Archibald, 58, of Romulus, pleaded guilty Tuesday in 14A District Court to two counts of aggravated assault and battery, court records show.

Archibald offered the cookies to a 52-year-old Ann Arbor man and 58-year-old Saline man about 12:30 p.m. Nov. 7, 2008, at Margolis Nursery on Cherry Hill Drive, where she worked in retail.

Her coworkers accepted the cookies, not knowing they were laced with marijuana, Washtenaw County sheriff's department spokesman Derrick Jackson said.

The younger victim had a bad reaction after eating the cookies. He was taken by ambulance from Olive Garden in Ann Arbor to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Superior Township after complaining of heart attack-like symptoms, Jackson said.

The incident was reported to police 11 days later.

Archibald originally was charged with two felony counts of placing harmful objects in food, but reached a plea deal that calls for those charges to be dismissed.

She no longer works at the nursery. Reached by phone Wednesday morning, she declined to comment.

Archibald is out on a promise to appear in court and is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 28, when she faces up to a year in jail on each misdemeanor count.

I am not sure what was going through this woman's mind to be sincere... This would be no different, than taking your prescribed vicodens, and putting them in something, and giving that to someone unknowingly. It is ignorance at the least, and criminal at the most...

If someone at work were to give her a home baked good laced with lithium unknowingly, would she enjoy it?

Medical Cannabis use is a personal choice I would be very upset to find anything I ate unknowingly tainted with medication or alchohal . It seems like people make this mistake way to often . The penalties are stiff . I woould be terrified of injuring someone your responsable whether related to the cannabis or not . What if they have a accident not used to the effect like a regular patient with experience usually is ?

Even if cannabis is legalized this would be wrong to do every time . For your own saftey medical users should dose individually . I was just discussing heart issues yesterday . Many of us are compromised after years of FDA meds like Darvocet , Vioxx , Zelnorm etc .

Four days really! I laughed my azz off at the two other posts that asked what the strain was and they must have good insurance. They forgot to mention the other co workers who were very pleased with the delicious confections.

I certainley wouldn't and dont approve of what she did but certainley not quite the same as vicoden ?

Maybe like aspirin or caffiene, tylenol or ibuprofen. Or a shot of Cuervo or real Canadian beer.

More likely the guy was having an adverse reactioin because of another medication like ethyl alcohol !

4 hours would be much more believable, than 4 days. Maybe a typo ? More like a pathetic propaganda piece.

At least she wasn't connected to the MMMA, we hope. They're very hard up for news Downriver !

Jail her. She has violated the first of of Timothy Leary's Two Commandments for the Molecular Age:

1. Thou shalt not alter the consciousness of thy fellow men.
2. Thou shalt not prevent thy fellow man from altering his or her own consciousness.

(although I feel that Leary should have been clearer with #1 as he really meant "without their consent".)

Why the big concern of how this reflects on us as patients, this happened in 08 before the law was even voted on. How one stupid persons actions reflect on us as patients is beyond me. JMHO

considering tests an insured person being admitted to the ER with unknown causes, or in this case, perhaps a workers comp scenario. Have to take a look at the big picture. these were not office personal, they worked in a nursery. a place full of chemical that are harmful. So take the Laced food out of the pic, run the scenario.

It wouldn't be fully un warranted, or unexpected to find someone in that scenario, held until his health was insured to be ok. Take into consideration the amount of possible contaminants they (ER) were likely to start testing for, in search of a cause of the symptoms/reactions.


Plus we are not sure when it came to light, the cookies had Cannabis in them... Nor do we know the strength of it. We must keep in mind, just because We know and understand the effects, does not mean everyone will know and understand them. IF the ER was not aware the Pt admitted ate cannabis laced cookies for the first 3 days, a 4 day stay is likely as well. So I wont say much more other than in an ER setting, they leave nothing to chance. so 4 hrs / 4 days, both plausable depending on the timeline and facts...

However harmless cannabis is, to give it un knowingly to someone, as a joke, is not very funny imo.

It's always dangerous to give a person anything without their knowledge.

They could have been that one in a million person who has an allergy to it.
