I think this is what you're looking for. Let me know how it tastes.

Happiness @ One Rupee

It looked like an ordinary pack of gutka or paan masala. But "Ananda Munakka" was different. A Dutch tourist handed a packet to me with the words: "You have one of these in the morning and you are happy the whole day." She wanted to know what it contained. I told her that "ananda" meant "happiness".

The contents of the packet were listed in Hindi, which she could not read. Nor could I, for the lettering was too small. She got me a huge magnifying glass.

As I scanned the list of ingredients, I found the words "Shudh Bhang – 15%". Trust a Dutch woman to find it! I told her it contained 15 percent pure cannabis. She was overjoyed. I read out the other ingredients:

Munakka – 40% (crushed dates)

Mishri – 40% (natural sugar crystals)

Jeera – 1% (cumin seeds)

Dalchini – 1% (cinnamon)

Lavang – 1% (cloves)

Kali Mirch – 1% (black pepper)

Heeng – 1% (asafoetida)

And, of course:

Bhang (shudh) – 15%

I wasn't familiar with asafoetida, so I looked it up. You may want to think twice before adding it to the candy. :startle:

Asafoetida(asafetida)

Ferula assafoetida

Fam: Umbelliferae

Asafoetida gets its name from the Persian aza, for mastic or resin, and the Latin foetidus, for stinking. It is a gum that is from the sap of the roots and stem of the ferula species, a giant fennel that exudes a vile odour. Early records mention that Alexander the Great carried this “stink finger” west in 4 BC.

Spice Description

Asafoetida is a hard resinous gum, grayish-white when fresh, darkening with age to yellow, red and eventually brown. It is sold in blocks or pieces as a gum and more frequently as a fine yellow powder, sometimes crystalline or granulated.

Bouquet: a pungent smell of rotting onions or sulfur. The smell dissipates with cooking.

Flavour: on its own, extremely unpleasant, like concentrated rotten garlic. When cooked, it adds an onion-like flavour.

Hotness Scale: 0

Attributed Medicinal Properties

Asafoetida is known as an antidote for flatulence and is also prescribed for respiratory conditions like asthma, bronchitis and whooping cough. Its vile smell has led to many unusual medical claims, mostly stemming from the belief that it’s foetid odour would act as a deterrent to germs. In several European countries a small piece of the resin would be tied on a string and hung around childrens necks to protect from disease. The shock of the sulfurous smell was once thought to calm hysteria and in the days of the American Wild West it was included in a mixture with other strong spices as a cure for alcoholism.

I did some more research and found out that there was a mistranslation.

Munakka does not mean 'dates' it means 'Sultanas or large raisins'.

Although you could probably use dates if you wanted it sweeter.

Here is the corrected version in an easier to follow recipe.

Rockets

7 oz. Sultanas or large raisins

7 oz. natural sugar crystals

2 1/2 oz. cannabis

1 tsp.cumin seeds

1 tsp. cinnamon

1 tsp. cloves

1 tsp. black pepper

1 tsp. asafoetida

Place cannabis in a 150 deg. oven for 15 minutes. Let cool.

Add all ingredients to a food processor and pulse until blended.

Mix it in milk and get Thandai (literally - coolness), the enhanced version of popular Indian drink.

  • 1 year later...

well befor the bunny muffins hit the fan I had did a little research.

Seems there is not a lot of information regarding rockets munukaa, ( that is the name for them.

There was some references to bhang. Anyone got any friends from india?

I'll give you first hand information on the so called Rockets. They come in packs like these http://i59.tinypic.com/vqjdyo.jpg  (my stash I bought this afternoon).

Let's start with consumption. One 'rocket' gives you the buzz within 5 mins. It's a fairly large size candy (almost as huge as those classic gum balls from the machine). But chewing it is a wrong idea. I didn't know at first, and ate it like candy. Not only it tastes disgusting, but it gave me mouth infection. Had bumps on my gums for a week and it hurt like hell. I gathered that like other local treats, no hygiene precautions were taken to make these (most probably mixed together by hand). Ugh. So I decided to mix it with drinks, brownies, and what not. Absolutely no buzz when mixed with food or drink. Eventually I decided to split it in three parts (like small hash balls). Swallow it like a pill with help of some water. 5 mins and you get extremely relaxed. 30 mins later eat something (when you get the munchies) and you'll be in another "high state of mind". This casual high lasts you for about 2-3 hrs. I take a double dose to celebrate the weekends, but only when I have absolutely nothing to do. I can take one everyday and still perform well at work. But not with two doses.

Diagnosis - The herbs and other spices mixed with it are extremely beneficial for health (sleep, digestion, immune system and the sachet also says for improving sexual performance. I think that's with any weed though). Smells nothing like smoking a joint. It's just a mixture of herbs. But it almost smells like dirt. On the other hand, it flushes out my system every weekend. I mean really flushes all the toxins out. You will definitely feel it. I do think that what it is, is basically kief.

Proportions - The sachet says 15% or 15gm to be precise but that is the measurement of the whole batch. One batch of the mixture stated on the sachet is about 102 grams with 15 grams of cannabis in it (don't know what part of cannabis - could be the bud or kief. my guess is kief looking at the texture of the rocket pill). 1 pill is 5 grams, so that means 20 pills come out of one mixture of 102 grams. Amount of cannabis per pill would be 20/15 = 1.3 grams of cannabis. I think that's an alright dose for casual stoners, I suppose?

Cost - I get it on a price of Rs 1.5 per rocket pill. That is $0.02. Jealous yet? It's cheaper being a stoner in India.

Regulations - Although sold at many cigarette stalls besides the roads, lately there have been strict checking going on by cops. I have my stash for two months at least... i.e. if I don't go crazy with it.

Well. I hope this helped.  :dodgyrun:

Thanks for the info. I was never sure what the actual size was. The recipe is one of the most popular pages on my blog and many of the page views come from India (second only to the USA) although no none has left a review as to authenticity. I've been hoping someone could let me know haw close I came to the original.

I normally make them about 1 inch in diameter.

They seem to work best for me when eaten before a meal.

Thankfully I've never gotten bumps on my gums, I guess it pays to wash your hands.

Mine taste pretty good, but I don't put in the asafoetida. I also leave out the sugar. Sometimes I roll them in hot cocoa powder so they aren't as sticky.

T-pain here is the list of ingredients in (Written in what we call, Hinglish). Hope it helps. I doubt it that the Asian stores in US will carry even 50% of these ingredients. But they can surely arrange for it. Many of these spices are not even available at the biggest Indian stores. The recipe originates from somewhere up North where ganja is probably grown naturally in the open. I'm sure you've heard of the Parvati Valley in India. This specific rocket is manufactured in my State - Uttar Pradesh. I'm not sure if it helps or not but I'm trying to be as informative as I can.  :drinking-coffee: I'm choosing to not disclose the name the city. Don't wanna cut off my supply. You know. The name of the 'Rocket candy' (more like an organic pill) is Ajoofa Vati - subtitled Ayurvedic Medicine. Manufactured by OM Ayurvedic Company.

Wild Bill, I would definitely like to try yours. One thing I miss is the smell of pure Mary Jane. This one is nowhere close to that. When I'm in US again maybe I can compare both. I'm positive your's will taste better. Coated with cocoa powder sounds great.

yes very awesome, thanks for sharing. i'm jealous.

in china they have hemp medicine balls for constipation.

http://www.herbsbuy360.com/ma-ren-run-chang-wanfor-intestinal-dry-constipation-p-201.html (can also find these on ebay)

the chinese word for cannabis is 'ma'.

india and china being really old civilizations, no wonder they tamed the cannabis plant.

i've heard you could get raw bhang/weed in india at most markets, but in china it was banned super tough.

also heard you can grow it in china and no one really pays attention. who knows.

Absolutely right. Cannabis seeds can be bought in shops - but only when you go up north (Himalayan foothills). I was there last summer and you can buy cannabis seeds in almost any shop. It's part of the cuisine. My mom keeps those seeds in her kitchen, a bhang spice mix for making the indian salsa, and bhang powder mixed with salt as seasoning.

When it comes to growing. I have just made my first attempt of growing it outdoors. Nothing hidden. The general public does not even have the knowledge of cannabis plant. Most parts of India, weed is not even recognized as a threat, because it hasn't been glamorized by media.

On the other hand, bigger towns like New Delhi are quite strict with it. There have been raids in clubs and concert venues. Although, there is a specific hippie market in Delhi where you can buy western "buds" type weed from the tea stalls. The market is full of drug paraphernalia sold legally, yet weed is not entirely legal. It is allowed under government control due to religious traditions and its importance in spirituality.
