Rep. Fred Durhal Jr.'s Bio

Fred Durhal Jr. is serving his second term in the Michigan House of Representatives serving the residents of Detroit’s 6th District. He also serves as Chair of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus for the 2011-2012 Legislative session.

 

Durhal was born in Rochester, NY, in 1951 and moved to Detroit with his family when he was six months old. He is the oldest of 12 children born to Fred and Doris Jean (Whaley) Durhal.

 

Growing up, Durhal attended Detroit Public Schools, including Northwestern High School, McMichael Junior High School, Woodward Elementary, Marr Elementary and EsterbrookElementary. He later attended Wayne State University wherehe studiedpolitical science, Wayne County Community College and the University of Phoenix, where hestudied public administration.

 

Durhal has a distinguished public service record that includes serving as Community Resource Specialist for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation; Assistant to Mayor Coleman A. Young; District Director for Congresswoman Barbara Rose Collins; Legislative Aide to Wayne County Commissioner Bernard Parker; Deputy Director of the Detroit Charter Revision Commission; Legislative Aide to State Senator Jackie Vaughn, III; Communications Analyst for the Michigan House of Representatives; Executive Director of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus; Rent Subsidy Audit Clerk for the city of Detroit Housing Commission; and Executive Director of the Virginia Park Citizens District Council.

 

Durhal has a distinguished political career as well, having previously served as Political Organizing Director for the Michigan Democratic Party - the first African-American to serve in that capacity. Durhal was also an Executive and Administrative Vice Chairman of the 13th Congressional District Democratic Party Organization for more than 20 years and has served as a consultant and trainer for the Democratic National Committee. In addition, Durhal is an elected Precinct Delegate (District 23, Precinct 27) in Detroit.

Rep. Ellen Cogen Lipton's Bio

Ellen Cogen Lipton is serving her second term as State Representative for the 27th House District, which covers Berkley, Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, Hazel Park, Huntington Woods and part of Oak Park in Oakland County.

 

Rep. Lipton’s priorities include:

 

  • Making sure our schools have the resources they need to prepare our children to compete in the 21st century global economy.
  • Fighting to ensure that Michigan is a leader in the rapidly growing field of renewable energy, creating good-paying jobs for our workers and moving Michigan toward energy independence.
  • Working to preserve and protect our natural resources.
  • Ensuring the stem cell research industry thrives in Michigan.

During her first term, Rep. Lipton sponsored a plan creating the Small Business Investment Credit to help small businesses located in Michigan secure funding and expand during these difficult economic times. She also sponsored a plan to protect Michigan consumers from soaring auto insurance rates and hold insurance companies accountable.

 

Rep. Lipton was named Legislator of the Year by the Michigan Probate Judges Association for her work on legislation to help protect the mentally ill and children. She also served as a panelist at the World Stem Cell Summit in Detroit.

 

Rep. Lipton, a patent attorney and Harvard Law graduate, also holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Williams College. She has served on a number of boards in the community, including as the public representative on the State Board of Accountancy.

 

Rep. Lipton lives in Huntington Woods with her husband, Marc, and their two children, Corey and Celia.
