http://globalnews.ca/news/871214/health-canada-presides-over-birth-of-billion-dollar-free-market-in-marijuana/

1.3b / 37400 current patients = $34759 per patient.

Population of Canada 34.88 million / 1.3billion = $38 per person in canada.

well you dont have to worry about that happening in michigan, thats for sure!

a billion dollars? right down the shitter. well played canada.

i wonder if the new pot will be irridated like the last health canada pot was?

i dont get the reasoning...

home grows get diverted to black market is the RCMP's position.

so how are they going to stop diversion of the professional grow product to the black market?

the only way is to compete in price ? and by that, it means being more expensive than black market.

or by being an inferior product to the black market.

i think its time to find some canadian forums and see just how bad this is going to be.

Using wastewater from fish farming and hydroponic lamps, 100 green leafy plants are beginning to thrive.

They’re the bright centre piece in a dim 3,000-square-foot Cambridge warehouse where George — a marijuana grower who only wants to go by his middle name — has been selling the herbal remedy for a year to licensed users.

“It’s much easier to make money growing marijuana than lettuce,” he said. “I’d be a microbrewery if I was selling alcohol. I think we’re just at the cusp of the end of prohibition of marijuana.”

Now, pot is a cash crop.

Or at least George is hoping it will be — thanks to new federal changes surrounding medicinal marijuana.

Health Canada is poised to change its regulations — effective Tuesday — as it eliminates the federal department’s role as the middleman in filling prescriptions for the 30,000 people qualified to use medical marijuana.

Under the current regime, Health Canada issues licences which permit qualified users to grow or appoint someone to produce their medicinal pot.

But in an attempt to cut down on what federal officials say are “abuses in the system,” the government wants to put an end to home-grown production.

Effective tomorrow, any new patients permitted to smoke weed for medical purposes will have to get their prescriptions filled at designated growing centres like the one George hopes to set up.

Those already in the system have to March 31 to change their suppliers.

As of April 1, Health Canada will no longer license users, or distribute marijuana. Existing home crops must be destroyed.

Entrepreneurs looking to open up shop as new “producers” can apply to Health Canada and be allowed to set their own prices.

But they must abide by the department’s stringent rules, making sure their facility isn’t in a residential home. Growers must keep records of inventories, heighten security to stop break-ins, and ship the product by courier.

Currently, there are 156 applicants for the new producer licences; two companies in Saskatoon have been approved so far.

George, who has already filed his application to become one of the new producers, is looking forward to the new regulations because it will allow those who need marijuana easy access to the drug.

“There’s a total of four individuals we grow for but with the new regulations, I could grow for 30,000,” he said. “As long as the government allows the market to dictate, it’s a great change. The government has its hand in the medical marijuana industry and it has been funding supply to the black market.”

But Sam Mellace, 59, a Toronto resident who has been using medicinal marijuana for 40-odd years to help his arthritis and liver, said the new regulations target the most-vulnerable.

“People won’t be able to afford it,” he said. “The price is going to be similar, if not more, than the street market and the competition is going to be fierce. Without subsidization, (Prime Minister Stephen) Harper is making this program destined to fail once again.”

Health Canada officials said there were “real issues” with the current system, including mold and electrical wiring problems for producers and backdoor deals to satisfy illegal demand on the streets.

Since new pot facilities must be in commercial buildings instead of homes, inspectors will as of April 1, have the power to search to make sure everything is on the up-and-up.

Health Canada also believes setting up a free market for medicinal pot may generate competition and drive the price down.

“We had 500 (medicinal users) in 2001, now we’re at 30,000, so clearly we’ve grown out of the system we put in place,” said Sophie Galarneau, executive director of Health Canada’s medical marijuana engagement branch. “Health Canada has a finite amount of resources. The inspectors that do this across the country also do all inspections around all controlled substances.”

Don Schultz, of Green Line Academy, a Kelowna, B.C.-based company that gives seminars of growing marijuana commercially, is holding a conference at a Toronto airport hotel near the end of October in light of the upcoming regulation changes.

“It’s pretty lucrative,” he said. “You could make up to an extra $30,000 a month. I think there’s enough room for enough people to be marijuana producers. You’re going to need a few facilities to supply that.”

Schultz said the attitudes towards marijuana seem to be getting more relaxed in Canada, but a stigma still remains.

“Some competing newspapers I’ve tried to advertise in, they’ve told me they can’t run an ad for something that’s illegal in Ontario,” he said. “We’re not doing anything illegal. Even when opening up a bank account, they look at you funny.”

Health Canada officials said they aren’t washing their hands of the marijuana program, but that their duty only lies in making sure the producers they licence comply with the laws.

“We’re treating marijuana as any other pharmaceutical drug,” Galarneau said. “It’s really not Health Canada’s business to get into the relationship between a doctor and patient or the business of distributing pharmaceuticals or drugs.”

The canda style will be coming to America...They just want the $$$$...and they DO NOT WANT home grows because lets be honest none of the CG's are paying taxes.   even reduced amount of taxes.  The money made off MED MJ or illegal MJ eventually trickles back into the economy by normla sales and purchases but the Government wants more.

Just like the kids in the Cell phone commercial.  "More is Better".

Its all just about the capturing of the BENJAMINS.

And with the Government shutting down and squabbling about this and that Legalization is coming sooner than most think.  Just about the money.

The sick, poor, Grandma eventhe "KIDS" are all going to be sitting back seat to the GREEDY HANDS OF The Corporation of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

and for those of you that don't know that our country is a just GIANT CORPORATION...what rock have you been hiding under..????
