eric ericson, the former san francisco longshoreman/philosopher, labeled folks like gahndi, mandella, st. paul and john roberts as 'true believers' who ignore their own lives and needs (and common sense) to accomplish a mission with which they are obsessed beyond the point of reasonability as seen by 'normal' folks.  paul was illogical to turn down release in favor of apealing to cesar, which meant a 2-year trip to rome and an additional 2-years of house arrest.  paul was estatic to be held under house arrest where he could convert centurion guards( who often moved into leadership of the gov), who were his captive audience.  his guards had to be close enuf to hear him expound jesus.  paul considered himself not in prison (he stayed when an earthquake collapsed the jail and freed him)  because he was in the best place he could be to to convert fellow roman citizens and soldiers for jesus christ.   paul's goal was to preach christ and him crucified, no matter the personal cost.  he turned down release to get in front of the emperor and preach christ to him, ultimately being slain for his actions.  that's because he counted his life for loss, and the oppty to preach christ to power the only thing in life worth doing.  

in 300 years, the official religion in the roman empire was christianity (remember Constantine)?  once again an ind. totally dedicated to a cause had changed the world, which ericson believed was the only way the world changes.

ericson considered true believers neither good nor bad, that depended upon their goals, cause people like genghis khan and alexander the great murdered thous in pursuit of their missions.

paul asked to stay in jail rather than go free and live, roberts chooses to spend for alcohol for patient's oil rather than for housing.

mark zuckerberg has a streak of the true believer; just listen to his future vision for facebook becoming the social structure of the world--and not jst the cyber world.  he won't take his $20 billion and retire to centerfolds and parties (think hugh hefner) cause his goals keep him working 17 hours/day to change the world.  mark is in love with cyber change and never sees himself retiring,  which is the best way to consider true believers.  they're in love with their goal, whatever that goal be.  it is not logical, but it is the force that drives them.  and tbs get up after being run-over and go back to what they were doing when the truck interrupted.

for us on-lookers the question is, do we share the goal and if so, how can we best further theirs?

He was warned many times by people who told him they were telling him those things because he was a friend to stop being reckless. I don't know what his issues are, but the upshot is counter productive.

paul did not listen nor does john, it is the recklessness of the man in love with changing the world.  a true believer sees changing things as a straight-ahead mission regardless of the difficulties, even if they create the difficulties, as john and paul certainly chose to do.
