Considering Learning The Bass!

So here's the deal, I'm considering learning the Bass guitar. I love funk music and would love to learn how to play it myself some day so that I can just jam out on occasion.

So, for any of you who know a thing or two about this particular thing, please inform me of what a good starter bass may be? Should I get an amp right off the go as well?

I'm more or less looking for a complete newbie shopping list  :geek:

That's a great endeavor!  Music is in an integral part of man's existence.  Some are moved by simply listening, while some have the spark within to create.   Initially, spend as little as possible.  The $75.00 to $100.00 range should get you a decent used bass guitar to start.  I suggest not purchasing from an online source, but from a small local music store. If buying local from a friend, first take it to a music store for an evaluation (warped neck, bad frets, bad wiring) so you'll feel confident in the purchase.  While you're there ask about lessons. A small inexpensive amp (30.00 to 50.00 used) is a plus, but not necessary to getting started. There are also acoustic/electric guitars, though a bit harder to find used.  I recall that there used to be a few "made in Korea" acoustic/electric basses that were decently made and ran anywhere from 175.00 to 250.00 new.

The most important thing about learning any instrument, is that you practice on a daily basis. It is the only way you will make progress. Even people who've been playing for decades can improve through daily practice.  I continue to reach new levels of ability the longer I play.  If you're willing to make the commitment, the rewards are ten-fold. I guarantee that the synapses in the brain will firing at a higher rate. If you're not sure that you can, then save yourself the grief, and the money, and try a different hobby.

So your shopping list is:

Desire/commitment

Bass (amp optional)

Daily practice
