Detroit marijuana expo boasts 100 vendors and a magic bus ride to try out wares

At the fourth annual medical marijuana expo — being held through Sunday at Detroit’s Roostertail catering facility — a $15 admission fee lets patrons visit the booths of more than 100 vendors of medical-marijuana supplies, including costly gear for raising the plants as well as apparel and curios that celebrate the pot-loving lifestyle.

And according to an online promotion for the THC Expo, attendees who possess a state medical-marijuana card “will also be able to ride the magic vapor bus to a designated medicating site.”

But, as in previous years, that site’s location is kept secret to avoid difficulties with curious law-enforcement officers as well as news reporters, organizers said.

Expo impresario Tom French of Roseville said he hoped to attract 10,000 patrons this weekend, doubling the 5,000 attendance figure from last year’s THC Expo. The letters stand for the compound in marijuana thought to impart the drug’s effects and some of its medicinal qualities.

“I’m hoping a lot of people come out ... because we’ve got new laws to think about,” French said.

One that went into effect April 1, 2013, requires anyone seeking a doctor’s approval for medical marijuana do so in a “bona fide doctor-patient relationship.” French’s expo offers on-site doctor approvals for those sending applications to Lansing, offered by the same physician who provides exams year-round at French’s business, American Medical Marijuana Professionals. French charges $150 for the doctor’s exam and assistance with state paperwork, he said.

That complies with the state law because French retains records for every patient and encourages follow-up exams, he said — in contrast with so-called pot doctors who set up temporary sites in motels and provide approvals after cursory exams.

A bill pending in Lansing would allow Michiganders to possess so-called medibles — the nickname for edible forms of medical marijuana, such as brownies infused with the drug. Passage of the bill is crucial to many medical-marijuana users, who often don’t wish to smoke the drug but instead consume it orally, said state Rep. Eileen Kowall, R-White Lake Township, the originating sponsor of the bill.

But Michigan state police have objected that they can’t tell whether a person is over the state-allowed limit of 2.5 ounces of usable medical marijuana if they’ve mixed the cannabis in a large quantity of foodstuffs, Kowall said Thursday.

She said she is working to resolve the issue.

I heard it is slow this year.

Slow...?  From what aspect..?  From who.....I do wonder how all the retail  bud shops and even hydro stores are feeling some crunch from saturation.  Lots of newbies hopping in the biz....I have guys from high school asking me about getting into MED MJ.  I just tell them be pre-pared to not make money for the first few crops...lol...because they will have sub-par meds.

But slow is an interpretation.  There are always winners and losers in every industry ....some figure out how to make it and some won't.

I heard attendance was slow. What was not slow was the push to milk as much cash as possible from the community by Tom French and Co.

ahh...lol.

There is a FAKE MOTOWN MEDS operating and dispensing to non-card holders to anyone with out a card at the expo.!!  I feel compelled to warn everyone this group is not me and I have not and never plan on servicing non-cardholders.  Even in Detroit there is NO provision to sell marijuana to non-cardholders.

the expo is a visit to a hydro store where the mnfr's reps are present, but it is more, beyond things found in a hydro store, like processing technology, both on the ingestion and smoking side.   the expo is lame in that like a grow store in that there is no medicating allowed on the premises with smokables, except the ecig vapes.

i was surprised there was no politics, no signature or petition drive on board.  course, you know, joe cain did not have a table.  and surprised to learn that the only class offered is a one-day $100 preview of the marijuana biz in michigan, with an emphasis on caregivers and the money they make selling to disps, and it is full (with 20 paying students) weekends.

and that there was a guy pushing a weed still, a new use of old technology that puts easy old-boy oilmaking by the oz into the hands of every grower for $55.  the inventor promises '2.25 oz rick simpson oil 84% thc per lb of trim'.  to put one into the hands of every grower for $55 plus tax is this innovator's dream, by going on shark tank and getting funding for a mnfr's run if 30,000 units.  it looks like a kettle with a copper bent tube out the top.  and it operates cheap--sits on your stove burner and reclaims 80% of the everclear on every run.

and male that i am, i sharply appreciated the young stunning stairway ladies, the beauty in red lips and cream brocade gown.  she stood on the lower step aping mae west, inviting folks to come on up; and watch your step to the 2nd floor of exhibits.  the bar did steady not spectacular biz with beer $4 and mixed drinks $10.

the final surprise was nasty. i was there on friday and some of the exhibitors are not going to man their tables until saturday.  i felt ripped off because you have to  pay the $15 every day you enter--altho your female with you only has to pay $10.

WOW! i see you had a good time ?

I guess not

i waited until now to give my opinion  i found myself in some kind of dream  of making Oil by the OZ with a new kind of gadget

Then i also saw one long line of people getting certified by the Doctor and the first thing i thought was the court  where going to be very busy with Cannabis users

most may end up with probation

then i saw another long line of people getting on a bus taking people to a secret place so they could use Cannabis after they saw the Doc i don't think anyone was waiting for some kind of 21 days like that would even help them in a Court room

I would have informed them all about the recent case laws, but first I would have found out who that Dr was and did a little research, to see where he was from....but then again, I would have probably been flamed, slandered and laughed at..

I agree but i wasn't the one that would have done it eater

do you think it makes us all look bad ? i do

Spend $100 for the opportunity to spend $1,000's. Sounds like a great deal. I hope they taught them loose lips sink ships, but probably not since they also convinced a bunch of people it was a good idea to get on a bus to ride from a public event to buy cannabis and smoke in a public area. And they did on-site physician certifications. Is it a surprise that not one attorney sponsored this event?

I did not see any Lawyers at all there and i only saw two people that i even knew it was a different crowd then i have seen before and i'am  so glad i didn't pay $15 to get inn but $5 to park

I went yesterday. was pretty lame, as expected. $5 to park, $15 to get in. typical expo. hydro store displays, LED lights, trimmers, Eden Labs CO2 extractor display, pipes, Dr. rec's

still trying to figure out what the $15 was for. apparently Afro Man was playing at some point yesterday, but there was nowhere to sit and really nowhere to even stand. I couldn't imagine hanging around all day waiting, then someone gave Marvin Marvin the microphone.....I couldn't find the exit fast enough

now we get to the Magic Bus. guess what? ANOTHER $10! not only that but there was only 1 bus with 20min. turn around time. oh, and it's a windy mofo on the riverfront. we waited for 20 only to be bumped....they were full.

so we got the address from an inside source and drove out to the hall they had rented. we get there, walk in, don't even make it across the threshold when someone asks if we got a stamp..... yep. "well, gotta see it"... show stamp, walk in....that was the one and only thing they asked or cared about. no ID, no card, we spent at a few tables, looked at everything. I didn't get asked, nor saw, a single med card

as far as the meds. mostly typical dispensary crap. export/warehouse/outdoor. not all terrible, nothing great. there was a couple samples that we bought, wasn't anything special, and it was the best in the house.

the hall was pretty big with 2 large tents they had attached. no room to navigate because they had the isles so narrow. had to be 50 vendors. oil, medibles of every kind, topicals, e-cigs, clones, seeds, glassware

prices weren't that bad considering. I saw everything from $8 to $15 a gram. not that I think that's cheap, but being $30 in by this point, I expected the gouging to continue

I knew I didn't want to go. I knew what to expect (sort of). I knew I'd be disappointed. I was shocked at the disregard for the laws. if I hadn't been dragged there I would have passed and would suggest the same

lhb:  good research on the vapor location, and great exposure of the illegal practices there. i hope the expo does reform.   but really the pull for legality falls on a deaf ears...tom listens to dollars, and if the vendors complain the dollars are talking.

'cheap' table rent was $600.  short of vendor complaint, or arrests, tom is set--family (wife) $ makes him too brave.

it may be part of how his case was disposed of, too.

course in fairness i shud add that was roseville, but it did involve this doctor--he practices out of tom's establishment in rosevillle. both tom and the doctor were arrested tom told me, and others...
