More questions about

medical marijuana law

To the editor:

Concerning an article of news about the questionable/uncertain/somewhat vague new law for medical marijuana in Michigan.

How do we know that there will be no patient-to-patient transfers of marijuana? There always has been, hasn’t there? How do we know that there are no handy-dandy dispensaries around? It seems not that long ago that our local newspapers published ads, very noticeable and blatantly offering the public access to anyone requesting medical marijuana — just by coming in to sign up for it, to the advertiser. (I only read the Three Rivers Commercial and the Sturgis Journal.) The ads stopped appearing, so I assumed that the law caught up with the guy, and that it was an illegal operation.

I would like answers to some pertinent questions, such as: How often will homes with children of medical marijuana users be visited on an unannounced basis — a non-appointment visitation, with absolutely no prior warning?

As for people who use medical marijuana legally, that does not mean that it is legal for them to drive any kind of vehicle. They should be required to surrender (forfeit) their driver’s license immediately upon being issued a Michigan medical marijuana card.

I would like valid, independently studied statistics on accidents caused by drivers under the influence of marijuana and/or marijuana in conjunction with alcohol. How many holders of Michigan medical marijuana cards, causing accidents, suffered severe injuries or death in comparison to their innocent victims?

What about families in vehicles struck on the road, school buses, people riding in St. Joseph County Transportation vehicles, children or adults on bicycles, joggers/runners on roadsides, some with precious pets or valuable leader-guide dogs, Amish cyclists or horse-buggy conveyances, or “you-name-it,” hitchhikers, etc.

Regular innocent bystanders are no safer from medical marijuana users than from any other impaired driver addicted to any other prescription drug (or alcoholic drink). They don’t deserve a “right-to-drive.”

I take some prescription drugs with warnings against driving. Sometimes I “feel perfectly capable” of driving. But I do not risk causing an accident just because I feel I would like to drive and could do so safely.

And, finally, just what is a Schedule I drug, “rather than if a driver/patient has used the drug” mean? Double talk?

Thanks to those sensible persons writing the law who added that the law does not “regulate” private employment. No one has to risk hiring a user.
