you never heard the anti marijuana market spewing words of "toking clubs" and comparing them to the lack of "vicodin clubs" or the like? I heard that from the jump, as soon as we all decided to call mj "medicine".

Does the fact that you partake in recreational marijuana make it so that all your use is non medical by default? Can you keep em separated and therefore some of your usage is medical, sometimes it is recreational? Sometimes legal and sometimes not? Some times you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't? I think most 'long time patients' find themselves at these cross roads. They have found ways to enjoy their medicine of choice recreationally. Or maybe more correctly put, they have found ways to make their recreational drug work for them medically. By accident or by design, we find ourselves with a drug of so many uses that you can find both recreational and medical uses for just about everyone. Edited by Restorium2

my post was in response to bobntory's  "Joke and Toke" get togethers. Don't get me wrong, I'm all over that sort of thing. however, the anti's made big light of it when "we" decided to make clubs and gatherings to use our medicine together. surely you've heard of these rants from them? I heard them say "you won't see a sitting area for patients to use their narcotics in CVS" and similar.

Some people believe that rosemary is medicine, and others believe it is an herb. I meant nothing by it. I receive great medicinal benefits using both herbs, regardless of their classification.

Hippocrates said "Let food by thy medicine and medicine be thy food"

sorry for the interruption

carry on....

Regarding that stupid comparison to vicodin parties, the science of cannabis as a medicine is hugely under developed.  The drug companies (except GW), doctors, and pharmacies are NOT the subject matter experts, like they are with today's opiate pain relievers.

The patient community, generally speaking, knows more about using and creating this medicine than do today's doctors or pharmacists.  We are doing the trials on this medicine.  Other patients and caregivers are more likely to offer tips on strains, forms of ingestion, or possible points of access than pretty much anyone behind the counter at CVS, Walgreens, or even the professionals working at the best medical centers in this country.  Social gatherings with other cannabis patients are typically one of the best ways to try new strains and to gain knowledge on using cannabis as medicine.

Group gatherings are working sessions. We have not yet reached the liberal use of cannabis as medicine that is appropriate and necessary or for any other reason. I have yet to be with a group where the important business of moving the issues ahead was not part of pertinent conversations between individuals and small groups. Social fun is a part of what we enjoy, but there remain large issues that find ways forward in those affiliations that sow the seeds of more mature thought. Perhaps that is not the stated purpose, but it is unarguably an important facet. The antis meet regularly in those same kinds of conversations to bring their agendas forward, some in offices behind closed doors, some from a judicial bench, many in lounges over cocktails, and some in electioneering and just plain talking over the fence between neighbors. To suggest we should not exercise our best opportunities for social growth and justice is to fail in our duty to each other.

You said that

There is the High Times Cannabis Cup at the Auto City Speedway just south of Clio on the weekend of July 26-27.  There are a small number of cottages nearby that have been reserved by some people who participate here. Others already plan to attend. It would be simple to put things together around the event. There are accommodations five miles north at Birch Run. There is the Genessee County Wolverine Campground at the Holloway Resevoir about twenty minutes from the speedway.

While the hotel industry faces desperate economic times and new competition from online vacation rentals, one businessman in Grand Rapids, Michigan, has found a novel way to increase the occupancy of his hotel by 50% -- allow smoking, and not just tobacco.

Hotelier Bob Sullivan runs the Howard Johnson’s and has remodeled 20 of his hotel’s 155 rooms to accommodate smokers, including lawful medical marijuana patients. He plans to eventually convert between 60 and 80 of his rooms to allow smoking.

Smoke-free hotels have become the norm in America. Many tokers have been made aware of a customary $250 “cleaning fee” most hotels will charge if they discover you’ve been smoking in the room and wondered, why not just charge the $250 up front and let us smoke? The truth is while some hotels made the change to being completely smoke-free on their own, many others have been forced to by the passage of indoor clean air laws that forbid smoking at workplaces.

Michigan is one of the states that passed such a law in 2010. To get around it, Sullivan remodeled rooms to feature a sliding-glass door, which leads to a patio surrounded by tall privacy fencing. Smoking or toking is allowed on the patio.

While marijuana is still illegal for recreational purposes in Michigan, the city of Grand Rapids decriminalized it in 2008, so possession is only a ticket if you get caught by the city cops. Also, the state’s Smoke-Free Air law specifically refers to tobacco, so there is an open question whether smoking cannabis indoors is actually illegal.

Crain’s Detroit Business reports that occupancy at the Howard Johnson "has seen an increase every weekend," according to Sullivan. "Every weekend, every one of those rooms is sold."

Wyndham Hotel Group, the parent company of Howard Johnson’s, when asked about the marijuana-welcoming attitude of Bob Sullivan’s franchise, issued a stock disclaimer statement. "As a franchise organization, each hotel within our brand's portfolio is independently owned and operated and required to comply with all local, state and federal laws," was all that public relations manager Rob Myers had to say to Crain’s.

While Sullivan himself doesn’t smoke tobacco or cannabis, he certainly doesn’t seem to think there’s any problem with it. He recalled his time as a baseball scout for the Detroit Tigers in the 1960s and 1970s, saying, “A lot of them used marijuana and it didn't affect their playing."

I think the main reason there are no vicodin clubs is because of the method of ingestion. Smoking cannabis involves rituals which lend themselves to becoming group activities.

You don't get that when you swallow a pill. Although I've seen plenty of needle parties attended by those who no longer swallow pills. Lots of ritual there.
