The state attorney general is not saying why he opposes bills that would ease restrictions on medical marijuana in Michigan. Some top lawmakers are now urging Bill Schuette to detail his concerns.

Before there can be a vote by the full state Senate, Majority Leader Randy Richardville says he wants to know why Schuette opposes the bills.

“The attorney general put in a card, but I didn’t see any reason for the opposition. So we certainly want to get his input,” Richardville, R-Monroe, told reporters Wednesday.

Senate Democratic Leader Gretchen Whitmer chided the attorney general’s office for not offering an explanation.

t-pain, the news story you linked to, in the second paragraph, states "A state House panel approved the two bills this week."  My understanding is that it was a Senate Committee, not a House Committee (or panel), that approved the bills moving to "full Senate Committee" (that was the term that Richardville used) in August when the Senate reconvenes from summer recess.  It's just a minor reporting error, but it may confuse some who are trying to understand what's going on.

It was at this week's Senate Committee meeting that AG Schuette choose to note his opposition by sending his card (I assume it was his business card) rather than to appear to explain his opposition.

Translation; The attorney general has been making it clear to me he doesn't want these bills. We knew all along he would hate them. He's given me pages of reasons why he hates them. I just want him to say it in public so I'm not the only bad guy around here. The jig is up.

The last time the legislature was working on wording for marijuana bills Schuette gave them 15 pages of marked up wording. He went over every single word and wanted to add a whole lot of restrictions. Are we supposed to believe he has kept his mouth shut this time?
