Amber Alert Questions

This is what I would call a KISS method. (Keep It Simple Stupid)

Grown in a 5x5 Gorilla tent bagged super-soil using aerated tap water under a 4 bulb 4 foot T5 (Veg) & 1000 HPS (Flower) powered by Solis-Tec

3/11 Started from seed in rapid rooters

3/20 Transplanted to 1 gal TGA Organic soil

4/11 Transplanted to 10 gal TGA Super-soil with buffer layer of Organic

5/15 Flipped to 12/12

I am a first time grower that is ready to harvest a couple TGA Jack the Ripper ladies. My concern is that I am ready to harvest but the trichomes are ALL cloudy and NO amber trichomes. I was looking to harvest at about 30% amber trichomes.

I have read that JTR is a true 8 week Haze as well as an 8 -10 week Haze. The TGA strain guide says JTR is a 49 to 56 day plant. My concern is I just finished day 66 and NO amber yet.

Have I screwed up or do I need patience?

Patience grasshopper,, the time frames are only a reference given by a grower that could get them to that stage in that time frame, there close, most of the time, but a scope is what you need to keep using till the amber is at your level of desire..I have to ask, your sure you know what your looking at right, new growers seem to have a issue with that, but once you seen them you know..FYI i had a haze that was a 8 wk but it really didnt look ripe till 10,,  grape ape is the same, it always takes time to finish over the reference line.. 9 wks or it wont purple up..

It all depends on light, nutrients, soils used, ph, ppm.. etc everyone is different in there growing.. so take that 8 wk time frame and then start looking for them illusive amber..once you got them , you'll know next time almost to the day when they will be what you want, provided nothing ramps up and changes things.. LOL

It should get better as it matures, but sometimes ,, it is what it is, there are so many strains out there,, i always question the source of the seed.. and or the clones,,( its a he said it was), but ??? you really have to trust the source,  Even then you dont know for sure :) Unless you tried it from the source,, you dont have anything to compare it with...I hve gotten up to 4 geno's of a plant before i got one that rocked,, others were as you say OK.. the last one was great...:)

I agree Willy. I mean I say OK, actually it is as good as 70% of the meds (flower only) at several dispensaries I use. Strictly my opinion only. I believe it to be biased. Naturally the taste isn't measuring up due to no cure, however it is still lemony. I am sure the taste will come as well, hell, its TGA for crying out loud!

The seeds are from a very trusted source indeed! A 5 pack - 1 culled early on and 2 huge males and 2 females. 1 tall and lemony and 1 short and lemon pine.

Like everybody says, I gotta be patient and keep watching the trichomes!

Wish me luck!

Okay, I just returned from mowing some grass for medicine. Upon arrival at home I looked at the trichomes on the LA Cheese that was donated to me and the trichomes are all cloudy with maybe 10 % amber. Very similar to my plants except the trichomes on the cured meds is very small compared to the JTR. Does size of trichome matter/mean anything?

only if you have a microscope man. otherwise you'll find some buds are tight, some loose, some have big white hairs, some have little to none. Some buds stink(my favorite) and some don't. Some stone well but taste horrible, or smell good and are useless(to me). Larger trichomes can contain more active ingredients though, something to keep in mind.

(I have never sampled mj that was better than it was two weeks from harvest, jar, no jar, no matter. degrading is degrading. Tobacco was "aged" and "cured" because it is fertilized up to the day of harvest, for the foliage, not the flower. This allowed the complex sugars and excess nitrogen to break down in the leafy material, lessening the harshness. Not sure how/why it was ever applied to dried flowers with delicate trichomes containing essential oils eeking a release each day, little by little, degrading into a useless vegetable in time.)I do know some prefer the effects of that though, I hope yours is awesome for you! any pics?? hmm?

  • 1 month later...

Well, almost 2 months later...I harvested at day 71. They did not reach amber and we had to move.

Because of the move the drying and curing were marginalized and I haven't been to a dispensary in 2 months!  Having said that, the new location is awesome. Empty canvass and I am excited about the second harvest. 3 strain TGA: Marion Berry Kush, Jesus OG & 9# Hammer.

recall that those breeder rooms are often near perfect, with measured c02 dosing, lots of professional attention. Adding c02 to my garden

matures faster, stinks more, all good things to me.

clear trichomes will eventually be dark due to the rapid degradation of the contents. As the terpenes escape(active compounds), the oils and acids begin to break down inside the deflating trichome heads. Physical contact, extreme temps, light, uv light, will escalate the process. Those JTR's should have changed your gears radically with milky trichs, and been screaming of rotten lemons by day 50. I love that strain man, and everything tga has done for me as a grower.  dial in that nutrient program, maybe amend with some worm tea while in flower, add some c02 especially in a sealed room. it's easy, sugar, water, yeast, gallon jugs for the proof.

Yes grass, those rooms are dialed in and ran by experienced accomplished growers/breeders. At the new location (currently being designed) the room shall be sealed and equipped with cO2. Possibly a generator...eventually.

By The Way, are you applying for the Mentor Me for Success Program?

Thanks and Peace!

I don't think you need a mentor. garden success is almost yours because you have good aim. I will tell you exactly what I did though, repeated by a dozen or so past patients. It pizzes off other posters surely, but Jorge Cervantes grow bible makes my garden successful since 08, no mites, no plant loss, no clone issues, no mildew issues, no bud rot, no humidity or temp issues. Every fan continues to blow 24/7 and every plant moves constantly. A liquid cooled c02 hangs on the wall, replaced last year with a old school model/pilot light, 4 burners, ceiling hanging 1500ppm @lights on for 12 hours/day. Promix/Happy Frog/2 gallon square pots, mild foliar feeding in veg, moved to flower room after 30-50 days of veg. Clonex, rapid rooter, 1 dome. I clone from a clone until I sense negative change(sterile cloning=300/generational clones, dirty cloning=100 or so) then refresh genetics with stocked tissue cultured originals, and new seeds occasionally. If they don't finish within 70 days I wont bother with more. Fire control, power shut off/phone calling, high temps shut downs, 12k btu ac unit in the wall in flower room(12x20) shared air between veg room(12x10) divided by a light lock curtain. Way bigger than needed, but awesome work areas. 2x 220 baseboard heaters one in each room, both w/digi thermos. 80 day time and 70 at night, 45% humidity(I think?)Dehumidifier on the wall. I keep plant pots in 3x3 trays with a slosh bucket drain. Each flowering plant gets approx. 4 cups of spring water(well in room) every other day. I've used homemade worm soil/ tea, jobes organic spikes, AN Mother Earth Tea, and Organicare pellets all separately with remarkable results. Spikes are dumb easy, tea is stupid hard work, organicare pellets may be the win, if the smell remains tolerable.

I harvest whole plants at one time according to menu requests for the following weeks. I manicure each bud off of the stalk. Some patients like the hairs intact, others want them trimmed tight, no matter to me, I've got 8 ounce (wet) buds trimmed in less than an hour either way. Drying room is a 2x4 grow tent inside my home, inside a closet, vented through a stink sock and outside the closet into the room, with a stink sock, dehumidifier and 5kbtu ac unit, 220 base heat/digi thermo. then I smoke it, even though I know vaporizing is probably better for me. I could stop using mj, but I don't think I could stop growing it.

peace
