RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Camel cigarette maker Reynolds American Inc. is snuffing out smoking in its offices and buildings.

The nation's second-biggest tobacco company informed employees Wednesday that beginning next year, the use of traditional cigarettes, cigars or pipes will no longer be permitted at employee desks or offices, conference rooms, hallways and elevators. Lighting up already is prohibited on factory floors and in cafeterias and fitness centers.

The no-smoking policy will go into effect once Reynolds builds indoor smoking areas for those still wanting to light up indoors, spokesman David Howard said.

"We believe it's the right thing to do and the right time to do it because updating our tobacco use policies will better accommodate both non-smokers and smokers who work in and visit our facilities," Howard said. "We're just better aligning our tobacco use policies with the realities of what you're seeing in society today."

While Reynolds will no longer allow smoking, it will allow the use of smokeless tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes, moist snuff and pouches of finely milled tobacco called snus (pronounced "snoose").

The company also will allow the use of Eclipse, a cigarette made by Reynolds that uses a carbon tip that heats tobacco after being lit by a lighter. First released in the mid-1990s, Eclipse is in limited distribution and one of the top-selling brands in the cafeteria at the company's Winston-Salem, North Carolina, headquarters.

The percentage of Reynolds' 5,200 employees that smoke is in line with the smoking rate in the U.S. That is about 18 percent of adults, according to the federal Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.

Through its subsidiaries, Reynolds American also makes Pall Mall cigarettes, Grizzly smokeless tobacco and Vuse-branded electronic cigarettes.

Altria Group Inc., the Richmond, Virginia-based owner of the nation's biggest cigarette maker, Philip Morris USA, doesn't allow smoking on factory floors and in places like elevators or hallways, said spokesman David Sylvia. Employees with separate offices can smoke in them, but otherwise the company has designated smoking areas in office buildings, conference areas and cafeterias, he said.

Isnt' this a bit Hippo-critical? E-ciggarettes? How about DC cigarettes? Seeing that's what actually powers them: the Battery, which produces DC current.  ...Smoking dead camels on the Pell Mell... circa 1600s

"There is a possible association between pell-mell and Pall Mall, which is best-known now as the name of a street in central London which runs between St James's Street and Haymarket - previously a small alleyway. That name was coined from the name of the game pall mall (a game played with a ring and mallet), which was played in the alley"  UKphrases

It's hard to hide the ugly truth: Especially for 50 years... or more

Al Gore Sr made his fortune growing and selling tobacco to the big companies. Then along came his goofy son and sued all of them. That's hypocrisy. Nobody forces you to buy or use tobacco. At some point, people need to be responsible for their own actions.

His daughter was pretty goofy too. She wasn't as lucky, though. Fortunatley Al Sr didn't escape before watching her demise, from lung cancer. She  passed away 4 yrs before him in 1994. Perhaps a down payment on his sentence.  Too many families have replayed this scenario...

The only thing we have to fear, ... is our government?  heard about the Nuclear Fracking waste coming to MI from PA, or the other Nuclear garbage coming from the other tennants of North America, Owehhw Caaanaaadaa.  MI one of only two sites in the Nation allowed to accept Nuclear Fracking Waste. Iowa being the other .

Uncomfortable trutheease.

Sorry for being so mean and scary...

congratulations jointedone!  I've known heroin addicts that were able to stop the #8, but not those cigarettes.

14 yrs ago I asked my doc about help with cessation. He talked me into zyban(wellbutrin, antidepressant)

I stopped using cigarettes forever only 10 days into it. I threw away the remainder of the rx and never looked back.

Truth is it worked. I was so brain fugged for 10 days, hypnotic, vertigo, anxiety, etc like a bad blotter. Nicotine made it deathly worse, so naturally

I quit using it because I wanted to quit anyways. I felt like I would die after only a week.

I now realize that the only reason I never started again was because somehow

I knew that the only way to quit again was with this dangerous drug(for me) and I will not take that type of drug again, so I guess I cant puff on a Marlboro.luckily

Nyuck nyuck nyuck

I miss the sixties, seventies, and eighties.

Yeah bro. So much of that in high school with the girls wearing those tight sweatpants. I remember being in 6th grade and going to the varisty football fames and walkin round lookin at the older girls. I dunno how they keep it hidden these days with all the tight yoga pants and stuff but you don't see it anymore.  At least I don't. Maybe I'm not looking.  ;)

coffee spew !!!!

Some men "dress" to the right, some to the left. Of course your "sometimes" being able to notice which side we dress on is directly related to the girth of our junk we're dressing aside. Some guys are not able to hide their choice even with baggie trousers, while others can peek around the zipper seem unnoticed.

Since you've broached the subject, what is up with the women who don't center themselves before going out?  Men are sure to often check and recheck just to be sure we're not off balanced.

ok, lets talk about those for  bit.

On the twigs they look good, but now, for the average sightings, with the tiny pants, those little muffin tops don't look good anymore, with the disappearing butts beneath., like upside down triangles some of them,  my opinion only of course, but those Cheryl tiegs butts looked good, full sized, proportioned, higher up pants, over the muffn top(like she had one eh) . anyways, I don't mind the weight, its the proportioning thing that's jacks my eye candy.

that said, know that I love women of all colors, shapes and sizes, wearing most anything or nothing at all.

Marijuana contains female hormones, and both sexes. It is thought to feminize those who use it. The longest running largest religious gathering on the planet is the celebration of Shiva, the hermaphrodite goddess of  cannabis.  just saying.
