Well, we have a problem here in Michigan.  We are about as car-culture are car-culture can be - worldwide.

As a result, we have oodles of former gas station sites that have caused soil and groundwater contamination.  If you look back in history, just about every drug store, grocery store, etc. on a major thoroughfare had at least one underground tank.   And most of those tanks or pumps leaked. If you drive US 23 from Standish to Alpena, you’ll pass 200+ former gas stations.  The same applies to just about any other stretch of Michigan highways.  The EPA delegated authority to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality/Michigan Department of Natural Resources (program names change with every new Governor).  But the point is that we in Michigan are in the top three in the USA every year for unresolved leaking underground storage tank sites (on-going competition between us, New York, and California)

In years past, a good portion of the gas tax was relegated to a cleanup fund to deal with these old gas station sites.    I don’t know, but I’d guess/hope that any new Michigan gas tax includes some funds allocated to deal with these old gas stations.  It used to be about 8 cents per gallon sold went into the state cleanup fund.  I haven't kept up on this, but I'd be curious to know how much of this new tax goes towards cleanups?

One critic, Gasbuddy.com Analyst Patrick DeHaan who says it would give Michigan one of the highest gas tax totalss in the nation.

But that’s why they waited until after the election to take it up.

They are against corporate, business, capital gains and progressive taxes.

They have never had any issue with shifting the tax burden to the lower and middle classes by lowering those previous taxes and top income tax rates;  while raising payroll taxes, property taxes(deferring business property rates though), licensing fees and sin taxes.

They speak from both sides of their mouths.

They seek flat taxes which are punishment to the middle classes and lower.  They seek to expand the tax base, which simply means items like taxing elderly retirement benefits,.. pensions, poor people who generally make under 20k a year and due to tax credits(Homestead exemption, child credits, EITC) tend to not pay any federal income tax(they still pay payroll taxes of course which is like FICA and medicare).
