Michigan Close To Drug Testing Welfare Recipients

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -A plan to issue drug tests to welfare recipients suspected of substance abuse is nearing final approval in the Michigan Legislature.

The state House voted 74-35 Wednesday for legislation that would establish a one-year pilot program in three or more counties.

Welfare recipients under suspicion who refuse to take a drug test would lose cash assistance for at least six months.

Recipients who test positive the first time would be offered treatment while still receiving benefits. Repeat offenders would be kicked out of the program.

Majority Republicans say taxpayers want to help those in need but not if they're abusing drugs.

Many Democrats say giving welfare recipients just one chance to fail doesn't recognize the realities of drug addiction.

They say they also worry recipients' kids could lose benefits, too.

I dont know if welfare makes people work that get cash from them,,,,but way back when they made my sis and bro inlaw to go a training school and learn a skill, If they didnt go they didnt get their cash,,,now my ex bro inlaw took up appliance repair he is self sufficent and owns lots of property (couldnt happen to a nicer guy, land rich and cash poor lol)  my sis took up secretary/office management, she is making it hand over foot, they got off welfare and are well my sis is a tax paying member of society, the ex bro is not on welfare any longer lol!

my lady gets food stamps, I wont let her use them on pop or coffee that is a want not a need, I will gladly buy coffee and pop, I had no problem buying my beer and vodka so well you know, and we do need them food stamps, it dont feed us for no where near a month (it would if I did the shopping but I dont cook so)  If I cant cook it in the micro wave or on a stick over a fire I dont buy it lol!

I realy should be doing the food banks once a month here, I have been to them, but I have a person close to us that volunteers to help at the food bank, and all of them get first choice of the meats and good stuff, yes I seen it with my own eyes, I just figure I wont go and at least one more person who may need it more than I will get some food for their family!

when me and my dad go places together he always trys to park in hanicapped parking, I wont let him if my mother isnt there, some times he dont listen to me, and I stay in the truck when he goes in places, I move the truck and watch him try to find it lol hey I gotta keep that blood flowing!

people buy booze with their food stamps, they sell em for .50 on the dollar, there needs to be less waiste, and no I dont think we should be supporting people who use street drugs on a regular basis ie crack, meth, heroin, etc!

I say put people to work some where it dont take jobs from others, well they can take prison manufacturing jobs, i guess,,,is there a win to this for the people, if they save money does gov share it with the tax payer? bawahahahahaha!  kidding of course!

I like the fact that the jap company making jakata air bags says its up to the car manufacturing to foot the bill and do the recall not a parts company!  maybe it will keep some part companys at home instead of slave labor nations and higher unemployment rates here!

legislature should be working on a program to get welfare people to hunt their own darn food (those who are able , of course, not disabled people).

give em a (confiscated gun) and a permit and find some land for them to hunt deer.

one deer can feed a family of 4 for a while!

what would that cost? .... nothing!

train a few of them to learn meat packing, butchering, sausage making, etc.

we got plenty of guns, bullets and deer!

take the welfare kids out hunting too! they got kid permits, kids go hunting all the time.

Didn't work in Florida. What makes them think it will work here? Florida ended up spending millions for nothing.

Also, what happened to the idea of drug testing ALL people who get money from the government? That would would include legislators and Bank executives.

Noone(99.9%) should be drug tested.

Fortunately, medical cannabis patients are exempted.

SNAP eligibility rules require that participants be at or below 130% of the Federal Poverty Level($973/month). Recent studies show that 49% of all SNAP participants are children (age 18 or younger), with almost two-thirds of SNAP children living in single-parent households. In total, 76% of SNAP benefits go towards households with children, 16% go to households with disabled persons, and 9% go to households with senior citizens.

According to demographic data, 43% of SNAP participants are white, 33% are African-American, 19% are Hispanic, 2% are Asian, and 2% are Native American.

Isn't it about time that we cut all the crap surrounding "welfare" recipients? It is time to just start beating these people. And I mean that literally. Beat them with sticks, poles, books, whatever. Why just nip at them from around the edges? Get right to the heart of the problem. Apparently, according to the republicans, the general public wants welfare people to be held accountable for getting government funds. Why not just make it legal to beat welfare recipients and make them wear signs so they can be easily identified by haters and beaten accordingly?

I am kidding of course, but Jesus sometimes I wonder.

The problem with that is people on ssdi would get tested too!  I can do what ever I want as far as meds, but if the gov tested me for drugs mm would disqualify me,,,,,,I paid into that and they arent getting me off of it till every last dollar is gone lol!

Welfare schmelfare. I call BS. What about the working poor? When do WE get a break? We don't get CRAP to help us! And get off the repugs, idiot libturds want everything for free. Oh yeah our state was doing just peachy when the Canadian was gov. PLEASE. She now works for barry, leaving all her damage behind. And yeah, people still lucky enough to have a job DO want govt paid people to be held accountable for getting our tax money,so what? No scammers getting funds? Just "rich" people, right? So how many people that get benefits work? HUH? I didn't hear you. Quit complaining and go use your 500 dollar Iphones, the ones WE can't afford. Everybody has a computer, so if you are so poor how do you pay for it? Eat that for dinner. We have medical bills up the butt, nobody helps us.But my Husband has to work 50 hours a week to pay our bills. We have a 10 year old truck and a 13 year old PT Cruiser. We don't have a flatscreen TV,or new furniture,I think the gubment should GIVE us one. You are all so poor you can buy the what you say are expensive growing lights, and systems, brag about it,but you are "POOR" You can get you RXS at Walmart for a dollar,I can't. Yeah, maybe Hubs should just quit his low paying non union job,and then we can pee and moan and get the state to pay for us to live. I can see the dividers here, the typical Saul Alinsky tactics to make people mad and hate each other while the politicians sit like vultures waiting to pick our bones. Yeah, good plan....if you live in Russia. I'm sure there are no poor people in any socialist countries like China and N Korea, right? Just the mean old USA. While they let thousands of illegal aliens across the border for us to take care of. If it's so bad here, then why aren't people leaving to live in OTHER countries? DUH.

The working poor are on welfare.  Walmart, Mcdonalds, Burger king(et al), gas station employees, restaurant workers, factory workers and many many others are on food stamps, Medicaid, CHIP etc etc etc.

As a matter of fact, because those multibillion in profits every year corporations pay their employees so little or allow too few hours worked, it costs the taxpayers tens of billions in food, healthcare, housing assistance, school lunch programs etc etc etc.

The entire Earned income tax credit is designed for the working poor.  The Homestead property tax credit is for the working middle and poor.

The working poor benefit from Social security, medicare, Medicaid more than almost anyone.

What happens most of the time is that the "working poor" do not realize they qualify for help.  Many times working qualify for food stamps,... but only like 20-30 bucks a month.  But as any working person knows,... hey, 20 bucks is 20 bucks and that is small bag of groceries to help the month go easier.

I dunno,... I think you may overlook some issues and not know what exists, which isn't necessarily your fault.  They try to keep the poor ignorant to these things, or make it so difficult to get help, you quit trying..

Yes Bob after a while you do quit trying and just make do with what you do have. Is it okay with you that I am sick and cannot work anymore? But I did work as a server since I was 18. It's been the last 10 years I haven't worked. Why don't you work? I wouldn't pass a drug test to work at McDs. I am just hoping to follow my family history and die at 65. CMON,DEATH!

This is a despicable piece of legislation imho.

Another way to target the poor. Based on suspicion?

Hmmm rather like leo walking up to your car saying they smell marijuana.

On any given day all that need happen is to have a worker be in a foul mood

and take it out on a recipient, or maybe that person has been crying (red eyes)

or upset and acting a bit irrratic... or, or, or... dam, too many variables.

I once had a dr. ask me if I was on heroin, not once but 3 times while I was in his

office.  I finally got belligerent and asked him "do I look like a f'n junkie?"

Any of you that know me, know that I am just too 'healthy' looking for anyone to

assume I am a junkie, let alone a trained professional. F that.

Then to leave decisions about peoples lives based on suspicion up to a friggin case worker???

Really? wtf???
