K.i.s.s. Vs. Tga Subcool Observations

hello folks,i went back to growing in dirt from Hempy buckets.i wanted to bring the terp.profile up and try a organic, water only, grow...there are alot of different soil recipes on the web, i decided on TGA Subcools SuperSoil and at MiBrains suggestion his K.I.S.S. recipe...a side by side grow if you will...its a small grow 5 plants total, same room, same pots, same lights,etc...so i made my first mistake by overwatering when i transplanted from 1 gal.pots into the 7 gal.pots they are going to finish in,, and thats when i descovered the first differences in the soil recipes...all the plants were showing signs of lock out from the overwatering, yellowing leaves etc.so i cranked up my lights from 18hr. to 24hr. and tried to dry em' out..the roots organic in the subcool pots dryed faster then the promix hp in the kiss recipe ...after a few days the top of the kiss soil was bone dry but the soil in the bottom of the kiss pot was still very wet...but what i was able to do was , take the plants out of the soil and then stir it up,making it much more uniform, then replant...it worked great..lol..it was a little tough on the plants but they bounced right back and now their roots aren't in such wet soil and seem to be loving it..because the supersoil dryed faster i didn't need to do the transplant. it took a few days but they slowly recovered. i couldn't have done a transplant with the subcool formula anyway because you layer the bottom of the pots with a nurts/soil mix and they're not ment to be stirred together with the base soil,,,the roots are ment to migrate to the nurts,,so my opions were limited there anyway..

i'm still in damage contol but seem to have a handle on it,,,stupid mistake...i was so careful not to overwater in the seedling stage only to do it in the transplant...at one point i though of reopening my second grow room and doing a hempy bucket grow again..thats where you can't overwater ever!!  lol. to me it seems that promix holds water longer then roots organic..i'm giving K.I.S.S. 2pts for its ability to be stirred if overwatered..lol...bp

LoL

Cool.

Subcools mix is kinda the next step in the KISS soil.  I try to stay as basic as I can for noobs. :-)  The concepts of layering is valid,... just a little more work. :-)

Greensand is fine, I just don't believe it breaks down fast enough to be really influential on an indoor couple month basis.

Other than that, the concept is the same and we were both tuning in our recipes together at the same time we were hanging out with hempy, krusty and plantbuilder.

Subcool updated his method a few years back and that is what you are using now.  I consider it totally good and recommend it to anyone as well.

im gonna pull up a chair and follow this one!  Im sending in paper work for my pt monday, which will make me legal to grow again!

I was seriously thinking of doing the kiss method, I want simple and easy, Im a lazy arse that cant keep his clippers off the plants lol!

I only will have grow rights to 12 plants like always, I have a c.g that got me thru these times,,,,so I never realy have more than 9 plants in dif stages, I like to leave a few slots open for a great find or mistakes!

Peace

Haven't tried either SubCools or the KISS blend, but getting excellent results with Doc Bud's High-Brix method and soil. Doc has multiple journals on 420magazine.com. Here's a direct link to his main HB journal. http://www.420magazine.com/forums/journals-progress/183995-doc-bud-high-brix-q-pictures.html

As a beginner (just starting third grow) what I like about Doc's method/kit is that all the nutes are formulated so there's no guess work when feeding, etc. no need to measure ph, unless you've got funky water. The key to the program is the ability to FOLLOW DIRECTIONS..

I had over watering problems before so I added lots more perlite and drilled 1/8th in holes in all the sides of my buckets, some more, some less.  The only problem I'm having is water running out the side holes if you water too fast and the buckets not sitting on the ground in their dish to soak up the over spill.  Those 5 gal buckets have the rim on the bottom to keep it about a 1/4in above the ground.  Works great with the dripper though.

I did have to add more spikes and layers to get enough nutes to finish and some heavy feeders could still use a little more dry ferts added to the top of the soil about a week into flower or more compost teas but its dialing in really well.

The green sand and bone chunks, eggshells, etc. work really well if you are re using your soil.  I've steered clear of adding any peat based mixes and have stopped buying soil.  I just get coco peat and perlite to add in with the amendments and dump a little in the outdoor garden as the base mix grows.  I can finally pick up a finished stump and pull the whole rootball soil etc. in one piece but the root system could be more vigorous.  The worms go in next and hopefully that will increase aeration and nutrient distribution to get it to the next step.

this was the the first time that i'd used promix HP and man does that stuff hold water..i should have wetted it down first and then do the trans planting...its been weeks and i still haven't had to rewater....i guess its a part of the learning curve...next time i'll wet it down and let it sit for a few days then stir it up and then transplant...i can't imagine how you'd do a flush, with run off,and not dround the plants...it's been a hassle from the get go compared to the Hempy buckets that i'm used to growing in....and these buds are going to have to be something really special to get me doing it again...lol..time will tell...bp

well yee-ha,,,i'm glad to hear that...lol..over watering is the single most issue for new growers..see my gallery for 5 very nice seedlings it wasn't until i did the transplant that i had issues...and then only because i'd never used promix hp before...of the five plants i have only two, maybe three are worth saving at this point...i'm thinking of pulling the other two and droping in a couple Auto strains to fill out this grow...but then again i haven't tryed growing auto's before so there's a chance i'll blow those up too...lol..always something..bp

I am new to growing and have had an abundance of issues using promix and nutes.

The 2 plants I have left were transplanted to a Mich based organic mix and  are flourishing.

No need for nutes.  I will most likely mix my own version of the K.I.S.S. mix

while making my own compost of leaves and coffee grounds.  I am also going to

have a wormery for composting my kitchen scraps :)

@ budpuffer  I ran some auto's and found they were a waste of my time and energy.

I am not seasoned though and perhaps in better 'soil' they would have done better.

Either way... I did get some buds to harvest for the 1st time so... onward I go.

Best of luck to you!

thanks man...the trouble is, that i've got one nice plant 24 inches tall ready to go into 12/12 and 4 that should go into the trash..if i start a new batch the 1 good one will be a monster and the soil will be too spent to carry it through to harvest when i switch the other plants to 12/12..and i can't afford to run the room 2 months for one plant..i haven't decided what i'm going to do yet,,i'm open to advice..lol..bp

  • 2 weeks later...

You can totally fill a 600 or even a 1000 watt canopy with 1 plant. Just make sure it's vegged long enough to fill up the space. 1/3 of the canopy size is what your looking for, when you put it in.

People online are always asking how long to veg, my answer is, as long as it takes. Give those other plants the time to start up, as long as the "good" one. Is large enough, you'll be fine.
