My idea on this is two fold.

This is telemarketing and how they 'get' your number is by using the area code first for example 517.

Then all the exchanges for that area, example 485, then the 4 digits starting with 0000.

Calling list looks like this:

517-485-0000

517-485-0001

517-485-0002

.

.

.

517-485-9999

517-882-0000

517-882-0001

The 2nd part of my idea is like email phishing.

Since you text back they now know they hit a 'live' number.

When I share my # with someone, I tell them to leave a voice mail on the house phone as I don't answer a number I am

unfamiliar with... then I can return the call.  If by mobile they should also identify themselves immediately... I don't text back

to a number I am unfamiliar with.

I get calls from people i don't know all the time

random number generation used to be popular because it was cheaper than purchasing lists.

both of you may be on a list of people to call for various reasons. From registering to a website,

using Kroger/cvs discount fobs, ordering online, or sweepstakes entries......"they got yer number man". The lists are cheap now and many make money online brokering the user info to the highest bidder. google lists government do not call sites to help remove you from these lists, or maybe sell you info over seas.....ever get that over seas telemarketer....? lol
