On Becoming A Caregiver

I've been away for a while, and a newbie left me a message over a week ago, asking about how to become a caregiver: how to offer your services to your first patient" was the jist.

Here's the response I sent this newbie in private message, since I may have missed something, and s/he'll find your responses here.

Hi, and welcome to MMMA. I was away until today so I just read your message.

Most folks start out growing for themselves (if they have a "qualifying condition" to get a Med MJ card) or have had experience growing illegally at some point in their lives.

You might search for "becoming a caregiver" in posts. I can show you how to search if you want. Or you could post by starting a new thread under "caregiver issues", asking your question that way. You will get more than one response that way.

Otherwise, unless you are growing for yourself first, you would have to find a patient who does not need meds during the 2 or 3 months at a minimum it would take you to grow your first crop. If you have little experience growing, that may be a challenge (both to find your first patient patient, and actually producing as promised by delivering his meds on time).

You will get a similar answer if you post your question since transfers between caregivers is not legal. I can't encourage you to break the law, but if you did buy some meds (either illegally "off the streets" or legally at one of various dispensaries which charge twice as much as "caregiver" prices) for your first patient while you got your grow going, it would be legal for your patient to accept the meds through you. The patient is protected by the Med MJ Act in that case.

Oh, and no one "makes a lot of money" by becoming a caregiver, if they keep it legal. So go into it because you love growing and/or helping people who need meds. Quite often sick folks are not rich and you'll find yourself donating meds to someone in need rather than you "getting rich".

Let me know if you need any more questions, need help with becoming a caregiver or posting and all. Again, posting your question would get you the most responses, and I may not have thought of all your options.

In some jurisdictions, dispensaries are allowed, such as within some city limits. I'd consider it "legal" to buy meds in those dispensaries, but perhaps not if you bought "off the streets" in those same jurisdictions. But, it depends on how the local ordinance is written.

I thought that a caregiver could not legally buy from other caregivers or "off the streets" in any other jusrisdictions.

How far wrong am I?
