Cannabis Cup Coming Back To Mid-Michigan

Recommended Posts

VIENNA TOWNSHIP, MI — For the second year in a row, marijuana enthusiasts will fill the Michigan Auto City Speedway for the High Times magazine's Cannabis Cup, considered one of the premier marijuana events in the world.

Put on by High Times Magazine, the annual event has been a popular gathering for decades at locations across the world.

The magazine's signature event -- a combination of a trade expo, conference, marijuana competition and cultural celebration -- started in Amsterdam in 1988 and is still an annual event there. In recent years, with marijuana and medical marijuana regulations relaxing around the United States, the New York City-based High Times has hosted U.S. events in states such as California and Denver.

With Michigan voters passing a law decriminalizing medical marijuana in 2008, the magazine has looked at the state as another battleground in the effort to end pot prohibition.

High Times brought the event to Michigan twice before, Detroit in 2011 and last year at Auto City Speedway near Clio.

Musician Wyclef Jean performed at last year's Cannabis Cup near Clio. Entertainment for this year's event has not yet been announced.

Organizers said the Detroit event was hampered by uncooperative authorities and local officials. After last year's event in Genesee County, organizers said they were very happy and hoped to come back each summer.

The event will include more than 100 vendors selling anything from growing equipment to seeds, clothing and equipment to grow the plants, foods and drinks. Attendees with medical marijuana cards may use marijuana in designated areas, but need to provide medical marijuana cards to access the restricted area.
