Rand Paul set to raise money from marijuana industry

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul is looking for big green from the marijuana industry.

Paul, Kentucky's junior senator and a candidate for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, is scheduled to attend a fundraising reception next week at the National Cannabis Business Summit and Expo in Denver.

An invitation to the event says it is being hosted by the National Cannabis Industry Association's political action committee, and a spokeswoman for the group confirmed that Paul will be the only presidential candidate in attendance.

However, Paul campaign spokesman Sergio Gor said Friday that the campaign is hosting the event.

"It's open to anyone willing to support Senator Rand Paul in Denver," Gor said. "Some of the attendees at NCIA agree with Senator Paul's legislation of medicinal cannabis reform and hemp cultivation reform and we anticipate will join our event."

Paul has not called for the legalization of marijuana, but he has joined Democratic senators in proposing legislation that would end the threat of prosecution for patients who use medical marijuana, a move that won the acclaim of pro-marijuana groups.

Paul thinks the issue of marijuana legalization "is best left to the states," Gor said Friday. "He's spoken multiple times that Washington should not get in the way of voters who have passed various types of legislation dealing with cannabis."

Paul has said little publicly about whether he has used marijuana, but he did tell WHAS-TV in Louisville that he "wasn't a choir boy when I was in college."

"And that I can recognize that kids make mistakes, and I can say that I made mistakes when I was a kid," Paul told the Louisville television station.

But the senator has stopped short of calling for full legalization, as has been done in Colorado, telling the Hoover Institution in 2013 that he isn't "willing to go all the way to say it is a good idea."

"I think people who use marijuana all the time lose IQ points," Paul said. "I think they lose their drive to show up for work."

The fundraiser is scheduled for Tuesday

I think this is the first of its kind for a presidential candidate....a fund raiser with the cannabis industry...., especially for a Republican?

I've heard more than one cannabis user shout out for this one surprisingly.

edit-found this  "The Republican is raising money Tuesday at the Cannabis Business Summit in Denver in what an industry trade group is billing as a history making event. “Never before has a major-party presidential candidate held a reception at a cannabis industry event, and NCIA is proud to host Senator Paul,” the National Cannabis Industry Association said in an email promoting the event, which was first reported by Yahoo News.

The minimum donation to attend the Tuesday event is $2,700, according to organizers.

Taylor West, the group’s deputy director, said the private “VIP reception” is designed to let marijuana insiders hear from Paul, who supports legislation to legalize medical marijuana and give the pot industry access to banking.

“It’s the first event that we know of that a presidential candidate will be involved in the industry,” she said in an interview. “He’s kind of in a class of his own.”

When has there been a time in history when there was such a thing as a cannabis industry event?

Doesn't matter how they spin this... he is reaching for votes...

he does not support cannabis.

At least he is willing to listen and open his mind to opinions that differ from his. Let's just hope that he sees the light and begins a rational discussion about marijuana.

Nope  he has stated that he does not support legalizing  cannabis,,  he supports the federal law,

"I think drugs, marijuana included, aren't good for you," Paul said

Paul told a group of law students at Northern Kentucky University last month he would not support lifting the federal ban on marijuana use,   http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/12/05/asked-about-marijuana-rand-paul-says-made-mistakes/

@ 2700 a plate, who do you think is paying?   Not the average joe for sure.

This a big money INDUSTRY, he is not interested in we the people.

We the people could hope that the leopards will change their spots,

but hoping so won't make it so.  They are in it to win it and will lie all

the way to get there.

Researching candidates prior to campaign 'promises' imo is a better

way to know the candidates.  How did they vote on issues... how many

times did they actually vote (this piece of info is astounding), what

bills they may have sponsored... oh, and how many times has the media

run a personal story about them, more importantly though... is what

the article is about. Etc...

I do not believe politicians are altruistic in any way shape or form.

They will say what ever lies are necessary to win.

Once all the lies are told and the public gobbles them up as if they

were truths... someone makes it into office... then what does it matter

what platform and lies they told because now they are only a figure head,

a puppet.

This is just my little ole opinion.
