So I heard about this teen boy who likes to "wear girls clothes" and how his mom and insurance finally approved a 21,000$ estrogen implantation device to delay/alter his puberty stage.

I imagined if the child was stricken with seizures , the plight of the parents, and the insurance coverage debacle. Mom would be forced to become felon, or smuggler, or would have to move out of the state to get a couple grams of the life saving seizure stopping cannabis oil denied to the sick in our lovely state of MI. NO problem drugging a kid with powerful animal hormones to change his sexuality though, NO thoughts towards the thousands of cancer deaths related to this same estrogen therapy,  no mention of cognitive abilities, mental health issues, behavioral issues, IQ,  case studies, while using the hormones.  The medical community, LARA, police and parents have been duped into believing cannabis oil is evil and NOBODY should have access to it except big pharma.   Estrogen has killed people. Cannabis oil has not.
I wish the child the best of fortune and hope he Never suffers any effects of this bizarre therapy or any more physical or mental disabilities.

a 14 year old girl who wants to be a girl is denied insurance coverage for her estrogen treatments(20 dollar birth control) yet a boy who wants to be a girl gets his estrogen treatment covered.....mad world

propaganda is why trans causes are so accepted.

propaganda is also why marijuana is villified.

interesting observation, grass. very interesting. thanks.

remember sandra fluke trying to get her employer to cover estrogen (birth control)? she relayed a story about her friend who had polycystic ovary syndrome, the treatment for that is also birth control pills.

remember before obamacare, health insurance companies could deny people with pre-existing conditions? many women with polycystic ovary syndrome were denied health coverage because it was a pre-existing condition.

Good post until the part about 14 yo and birth control. This is a bull ship argument by the left. 99.9% of all insurance plans cover birth control. If not there is planed parenthood, health departments, physician samples, boy friend,  parents, or $10 cash. If you can't figure out how to acquire birth control, maybe you are not ready for the adult world of sex. As for polycystic ovary syndrome, it was always an exception even in the days when Blue Cross did not cover BC.

The cash coverage isn't the issue, but rather the easily accepted insurance claim for a (elective?) procedure and female hormones into a genetically male child. My insurance did not cover my wife's birth control for the years I carried it. Her current insurance does not cover birth control pills either. I know of more than 3 girls who get theirs form a Canadian website just to avoid the nasty health clinics available to them. Birth control insurance coverage as I understand is a fairly recent development. I fear we'll soon be sexing our kids at will with surgery and drugs before their 13th birthday, when all hell breaks loose for the rest of us and while we go through mass changes sexually, physically and mentally.

You have to admit hopefully that covering a 20 buck a month birth control pack to prevent teen pregnancy might be a large leap away from the quick coverage of a 20k surgical procedure for the implantation of an auto injector  charged with pig hormones in order to keep a kid from experiencing puberty correctly, to grow breasts, lose their penis, facial hair, and shrink their testicles, enough until they at least feel like a girl instead of a boy, right?

Recall I'm picking on the insurance coverage, the morality of parenthood, a physicians oath, our trust in the system as it is today, not the kid.

but, what is the result of the chromosome test for these drugged kids?   How can we drug them for a life change before they even get to high school, without a universal test.  Are the parent supporting these procedures thoroughly tested too? How do we know of their influence on the developing child? /Without a definitive test of X & Y, ambiguous  genitalia, this, I consider a psychological issue, not a physical issue that somehow requires the addition of animal hormones to complete. None of us are prescription drug deficient.

I do believe these genetic anomalies will become more common place. Not only the psych end spewed in the media but the ridiculous amount of hormones in our atmosphere/water supply/food chain. Sexual confusion is a big deal in polluted areas, for mammal and reptiles already, why is this not treated like an environmental issue by the cdc I wonder ?   oh yeah, 20k to inject pig hormones.....that's why.

zap,

"I do believe these genetic anomalies will become more common place. Not only the psych end spewed in the media but the ridiculous amount of hormones in our atmosphere/water supply/food chain."

a "genetic anomaly" will show proof in chromos
a psych issue may not.

since not sure if this case is a genetic anomaly or a psych issue, a plausible coverage of the dis-ease was considered.

a boy who thinks he wants to be a girl, for whatever reasons, like media coverage, abuse, confusion, ok to be gay thing= could be psych
a boy who thinks he wants to be a girl, and has the chromos to prove the cause= could be environmental causality.

adding hormones to a persons food will alter their sexuality a well as their psychology.

in other words why would we trust a preteen to decide a life altering sexual choice at this age with mind and body altering drugs, known to cause cancer in adults now? especially without genetic "proof"  ?

 yah?

(NaturalNews) A study published in the August 9, 2010, issue of Pediatrics concluded American girls are undergoing puberty earlier than they were decades ago. While there are many reasons to be concerned about this conclusion, Americans may also want to consider how to prevent future generations from early onset. Dr. Frank Biro and his colleagues who published the study said they don't know what has caused the early onset of puberty, but many people believe that a Western diet has more to do with early puberty than others would like to realize.

This kinda sounds good on the surface but makes light of a complex issue and somewhat ignores the crux of the issue.  In my high school of about 250 kids, there were usually about 8 girls a year who got pregnant.  I talked with several of them, and  their story was the same.  They hadn't planned ahead to have sex; they just ended up caught-up in the moment, sometimes drunk and in the back seat parked in the service driveway of a cornfield somewhere.  The responsibility needs to fall on parents, guardians, school counselors, church leaders, etc.  to recognize the risk of unwanted pregnancy and prepare young people for it.  We can't rely on the judgement of a hormone-raging teen to plan ahead.  Experience shows this doesn't work.

It doesn't matter how much chaperoning and oversight parents give.  Kids will have sex.  I knew a few kids in my school whose parents always kept a watchful eye and  the kids were never left alone - except at lunch time at school (we had off-campus lunch)  and these kids would find a place for a quick screw at the noon hour.  Sex is like drugs.  If someone wants to do it, they will find a way.

The idea that a teenager will make the sound judgement that if they don't find birth control, they won't have sex reminds me of why I quit watching Oprah about 25 years ago.  I was actually sitting in the waiting room of my wife's OB/GYN's office when there was an Oprah program about teen pregnancy and abortion.  A member of the audience said, "If a teenager is old enough to make  the decision to have sex, they are mature enough to make the decision about whether or not to have an abortion."  To my amazement, most of the audience clapped and cheered.  My own position on abortion is irrelevant, but I couldn't believe the small-mindedness of the audience, and I hope it doesn't reflect the average parent's view.  Ummmm....if a teenager (male or female) is in a position where they feel that abortion is the answer, then clearly they were not ready for a pregnancy, and clearly, they were never in a position to be mature enough to decide when it was time for sex.

Point is, some young people will always cave-in to hormones and leave better judgement aside.  It is the responsibility of the mature people in their life to help keep these kids out of trouble.

Call me a liberal or whatever, but I have a 15 y/o son and a 14 y/o daughter.  I'm involved enough in their lives that I know they are not perusing sex at this stage, and I tell them time and time again that I don't approve of them having sex before marriage (maybe old-fashioned, but it's a starting point)  When the time comes that I see them at risk, I'll have no problem helping my daughter get on BC and giving my son and daughter  condoms, just in case.

This is similar to the drugs and alcohol discussion we have.  I continually tell my kids that I have no tolerance for them using drugs or alcohol or hanging out with people who do.  But I've also told them that of they ever end up in a situation where they made a mistake or are around people who made a mistake, they must call me at any hour and I will pick them up - no questions asked and no punishment given - same goes for their friends.  About 10 years ago, my nephew, who was about 19, was at a party at a friend's house and everyone was drinking.  The cops showed up, and many of the kids scattered, my nephew included.  He ended up in the middle of nowhere in Gladwin County a couple of miles from the party.  He called me on his cell phone at about 2am, and I told him to sit-tight and I'd get there as soon as I could.

When I was 16 I scored a 5th of Southern Comfort and shared it with a young lady I was sweet-on as we drove around in her car and then parked.  I drank a little - she drank a lot.  I drove her home before curfew and left her and her car in the driveway and then started a five-mile walk home in the freezing cold.  After I made it about a mile, her mom pulled up in her car next to me and said "get in the car."  We had a long talk.  She said that she wanted to call my mother and tell her what happened, but she wasn't going to because she recognized that I did the right thing under the circumstances and at least got her daughter home safely, and that was the main objective.  She as PO'ed that I provided the alcohol but was actually appreciative that I did what was needed to end the night without incident.

Fact is, young people will make mistakes, and it's up to us older folks to do our best to steer them away from the mistakes but also be there as a safety net to make sure that the mistake doesn't translate to a life-long obstacle.  It's a delicate balance.

As anecdotal evidence, my 14 y/o daughter, my niece, and two of their friends have been mostly vegan since about age ten - mostly because they watched videos of industrial farming and decided that consuming animal products is a really bad deal for the animals.  All four of these girls started puberty a year or two after most of their friends.

"Milk, it does a body good."  and it also gives some girls breasts in fourth grade.

I just wanted to say that contraception generally isnt as cheap as people make it out to be.  Ya have to pay for a doctors appointment and a pap smear right off the top.(I am obviously excluding condoms here). And many of the choices for birth control(many women and girls cannot use the "pill") come in at higher costs per month.  And about 90% of insurance plans cover some form of birth control, but not all. And still millions of people do not have insurance or live in families who will not condone access to birth control under their family plan etc.

To say it is ten bucks a month is really disingenuous.

in an uncontroversial way, you’d have to first get everyone to agree on what counts as intersex —and also to agree on what should count as strictly male or strictly female. That’s hard to do. How small does a penis have to be before it counts as intersex? Do you count “sex chromosome” anomalies as intersex if there’s no apparent external sexual ambiguity?1 (Alice Dreger explores this question in greater depth in her book Hermaphrodites and the Medical Invention of Sex.)

Here’s what we do know: If you ask experts at medical centers how often a child is born so noticeably atypical in terms of genitalia that a specialist in sex differentiation is called in, the number comes out to about 1 in 1500 to 1 in 2000 births. But a lot more people than that are born with subtler forms of sex anatomy variations, some of which won’t show up until later in life.

Below we provide a summary of statistics drawn from an article by Brown University researcher Anne Fausto-Sterling.2 The basis for that article was an extensive review of the medical literature from 1955 to 1998 aimed at producing numeric estimates for the frequency of sex variations. Note that the frequency of some of these conditions, such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia, differs for different populations. These statistics are approximations.

Not XX and not XY one in 1,666 births

Klinefelter (XXY) one in 1,000 births

Androgen insensitivity syndrome one in 13,000 births

Partial androgen insensitivity syndrome one in 130,000 births

Classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia one in 13,000 births

Late onset adrenal hyperplasia one in 66 individuals

Vaginal agenesis one in 6,000 births

Ovotestes one in 83,000 births

Idiopathic (no discernable medical cause) one in 110,000 births

Iatrogenic (caused by medical treatment, for instance progestin administered to pregnant mother) no estimate

5 alpha reductase deficiency no estimate

Mixed gonadal dysgenesis no estimate

Complete gonadal dysgenesis one in 150,000 births

Hypospadias (urethral opening in perineum or along penile shaft) one in 2,000 births

Hypospadias (urethral opening between corona and tip of glans penis) one in 770 births

Total number of people whose bodies differ from standard male or female one in 100 births

Total number of people receiving surgery to “normalize” genital appearance one or two in 1,000 births

that's a lot of factors to rule out before drugging and accepting all of the risks in doing so I think

good points discussed here;

So shortly after his birth in 1976, Bruce's external organ and testes were surgically removed and he was raised as a girl.

He struggled for years, preferring "rough and tumble" play and being attracted to girls.

"I was unhappy, but it was really difficult to ask questions," said Bruce, now a 34-year-old writer from California.

When he was 12, Bruce was given female hormones so his body would feminize. Then, at 18, he prepared for a vaginoplasty -- "designed to allow me "to have sex with my husband."

But he knew something was wrong and, battling depression, sought his medical records when he was 19.

"I knew that I wasn't a girl," he said.

What Bruce discovered was horrifying. "I was sterilized at birth -- and no one ever told me," he said. http://abcnews.go.com/Health/intersex-children-pose-ethical-dilemma-doctors-parents-genital/story?id=13153068

people who advocate for abstinence are prohibitionists of sex.

prohibition of alcohol didn't work

prohibition of marijuana doesn't work

what makes people think they can prohibit sex???¿?

highlander, probably it's just a good idea to set a bowl full of condoms out. look at those statistics of high school sex ages. younger and younger.

I agree.  This also kinduv eliminates the shame factor.  Most kids who grab a couple of condoms from the bowl are most likely putting on a show - the old and worn condom circle in one's wallet.  But for those who actually need them, great!  Condoms are cheap insurance and even better than the pill when you think about STDs.  This reminds me of when I was a teenager visiting Disney World, and the street performers in EPCOT Center would come around and encourage people to do stupid dances, etc.  They'd say "If everyone does it, nobody looks stupid."

A lot of teens are still kinduv shameful about sex, and that might make them hesitant to get protection.  I remember when I was in college and coming home from a long night out with a lady.  I stopped at a gas station to buy some condoms and felt really embarrassed about it.  For young people, it might be a little challenging, much like the first time you go to a strip club or buy a porn mag.  I bought a couple of condoms, and then, back in the car, the young lady I was with said "he looked out at your car to see the drunk piece of donkey you were going to get."  Heh.

A few years later I worked the night shift at a gas station.  The lady who trained me was about 50 and had seen it all.  My first night being trained with her, a kid about my age stumbled into the store and was trying to be all non-nonchalant while looking at the condom display.  This older lady finally blurted out, "We know you're going to go home and nail her, so just pick your condoms.  Do her a favor and get the ribbed ones!"

Shuping knew she had to be blind when she was six years old. She recalls her mother telling her staring at the sun would damage her eyes and so she stared at the sun for hours on end. As she got into her teen years she began to simulate what life would be like blind, wearing thick black sunglasses and getting a cane at age 18. She was fluent in braille by age 20. But by age 21 “blind simming” wasn’t enough for Shuping and she kept thinking about becoming blind.

And so she found a psychologist willing to help her. The process began by Shuping getting numbing eyedrops put in, eyedrops she purchased on a trip to Canada. Then the psychologist put drops of the drain cleaner in each eye.

Medical Supply and Demand at work right there? where is the line drawn?  slippery slope

She sought "help", and she found exactly what she desired. Who can complain.

I wonder....did her insurance cover this procedure?
