Recommend Me A Ph Meter?

Recommended Posts

There's this one on eBay for $8.88 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Digital-PH-Meter-Tester-Pocket-Portable-Pool-Water-Aquarium-Hydroponic-Wine-New-/291337254549?hash=item43d50db695:g:R5IAAOSwBahVDaaN

(note: looks like there are other similar ones even cheaper, so just use the above as an example.)

Any other suggestions?

This is a very good one: I know a couple of people that have been using these for years and they are very reliable and easy to calibrate. Nice fast readings:

Since I tried that one, I have always thought I'd replace my current Milwaukee with it, which is annoyingly slow (though it may be because I haven't replaced the batteries in five years). Also, I have tested it with calibration solution a handful of times in that five years and it has always been dead on (never needed recalibrated in five years) so I can't rationalize replacing it. The model I have appears to no longer be made, but of the current Milwaukee models, it looks most like this one:

thats the one i use very rugged and durable i have no complaints and i paid 60 not 50

Ok ok, I get it. I'll shell out a little more $$. I checked out the ones in the $50 range on Amazon and this one by Dr Meter came up pretty high in the reviews: http://www.amazon.com/Resolution-Accuracy-Pocket-0-14pH-Measurement/dp/B00ST3VTQ4

as did this one from HM Digital: http://www.amazon.com/HMDPHM80-Digital-pH-Temperature-Meter/dp/B0096N8OWI

Whaddya think?

I've  used this type of Hannah meter for a long time.  Style has changed a little over the years.

I got my first one in 96, and I have only needed to own 2 with minor upkeep.

Seems the cheapest 'decent' meters run about $40 bucks nowadays?

i bot 6 of the yellow ones for $42 (delivered from south korea) off ebay 3 years ago on the advice of longhairbri.   One per year goes bad.  I have 3 still in the original packaging.

The pens do fine with the tip kept in water between uses.

Smart! Then you have another one ready for when the POS goes bad. LOL

Either have quality or quantity. That's the answer .......

I bought one of those el cheapos and on the third use, I barely touched the glass bulb on the edge of the glass and it shattered.

The ppm meter only made it one use.

Just saying :)

Guess I need to invest in better quality tools.  Hell, I buy Craftsman hand tools for a reason... why not use that same reasoning

for my gardening tools?  Quality over quantity is what I was taught... don't know why I thought I could get away with cheap tools

for such an important endeavor.

I also agree with buying good quality tools (and kitchenware) but depending on the tool will often compromise on a Harbor Freight level of quality. In this case, it became quickly apparent that the cheapo stuff is garbage. So after getting smacked upside the head here after asking about a $9 meter, I ended up buying the HM one along with some calibration solution ($50 total).

I've been using a cheap PH pen from Amazon it was about $14-15, it works so-so, not great but not horrible, I believe it's accurate enough, but this thread has inspired me to get a better one. I put way too much time and effort into my garden to pass over such an important thing as an accurate reading of PH balance in my nutrient water and runoff.

I used the older model of that one for about 5 years, then it cracked and instead of getting a new probe piece due to unavaliability, i went with another hanna model, ran about 60- but well worth the investment!
