Mexican Marijuana Farmers See Profits Tumble As U.s. Loosens Laws

He started growing marijuana as a teenager and for four decades earned a modest living from his tiny plot tucked at the base of these rugged mountains of western Mexico.

He proudly shows off his illegal plants, waist-high and fragrant, strategically hidden from view by rows of corn and nearly ready to be harvested.

"I've always liked this business, producing marijuana," the 50-year-old farmer said wistfully. He had decided that this season's crop would be his last.

The reason: free-market economics.

The loosening of marijuana laws across much of the United States has increased competition from growers north of the border, apparently enough to drive down prices paid to Mexican farmers. Small-scale growers here in the state of Sinaloa, one of the country's biggest production areas, said that over the last four years the amount they receive per kilogram has fallen from $100 to $30.

The price decline appears to have led to reduced marijuana production in Mexico and a drop in trafficking to the U.S., according to officials on both sides of the border and available data.

Anyone remember the laughable claim that relaxing marijuana laws in the USA would increase Mexican drug cartel activity here? ("What, do you think that these criminal organizations are just going to let their profits slide?")

:lolu:

The cartel will/is growing med grade indoors in the U. S!

Lot easier to hide a ware house in plain site then a crop in the forrest in the U.S!

Ya got the Cash,,,,,You got the Cash!

Source?

Everything I've read suggests marijuana is just not profitable for them, unlike heroin and cocaine. More likely that cartels are importing superior USA cannabis into Mexico. Here's another article  that tells how difficult it is for them these days.

Well my source I guess is common sense!

I can keep my eyes open in the news and find a few source's I would imagine lol!

The cartles will and are changing with the times.  If I were a cartle higher up, I would grow it in the u.s instead of smuggling it!

They have money, There is always some one willing to take it,,It all boils down to $$$$ and they want it.

Gimme the Money!

Strangely we did have a trade surplus with Mexico during the late part of GH Walker Bush and early WClinton admins. With 1992 being our biggest surplus with Mx (over 5 billion) it has since flip-flopped to a staggering 49 billyon deficit or a 1003% negative flop.

We are the largest consumers of Drugs on the planet, I hear. If we could become self sufficient in Cannabis alone that would be an incredible best case scenario, imho. Most mexicans cannot afford 'hydro'. It's mostly for tourists like US.

Cartels major sources of income vary from extortion, gambling, mining, human trafficking, and of course drugs. They operate with unprecedented levels of impunity these days as they don't bother the banks and finance many elections...they have little trouble at the laundro-mats.

The thing with Mexico, unbelievably unless you can comprehend the linkage between US, they don't have any refineries!

...ok so it turns out they have a few, mostly in the South of the country, none in the Yucatan!

So we do their refining sell it back to them for their own citizens, who pay twice the price.

...sorta true story here, they dont have enough total capacity now for all their needs

They have actually just opened a half dozen stations in Houston where they are

selling gas at  $1.49 but  back in Mexico, even with a 6% price cut effective 1/1/2016,

they are paying $2.89 for reg and $3.08 for premium. And it's their oil...

***edited for correction, Mexico actually has 6 refineries, In comparison Calif has 19, Texas 25, Lousiana 18 ... in all 32 States have refineries
