Explosion At Marijuana Grow House Leaves Man 'fighting For His Life'

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Police say a man was using butane to process marijuana – presumably into an edible product – before the canister exploded and left him severely burned.

The 37-year-old man, who was not identified, suffered critical injuries and smoke inhalation in the blast early Wednesday, Jan. 12, in the 1400-block of Sigsbee Street SE. A 29-year-old man, who did not live at the home, was treated for injuries at a local hospital and released.

A 29-year-old woman and 6-year-old boy who lived there were not hurt.

The fire was reported around 12:30 a.m. at 1424 Sigsbee. Firefighters contacted police after finding a marijuana grow operation inside.

Police were told that the hospitalized man was either a medical-marijuana patient or caregiver but police, so far, have not been able to confirm that.

Sgt. Terry Dixon said the injured man was "processing marijuana with butane, thereby causing the explosion, the blast."

He said that even if the severely injured man was licensed for medical marijuana, it is illegal to process marijuana into another product using butane.

Butane can be used to process marijuana into products such as hash oil or butter but Dixon said police do not know what they were making at the time of the explosion.

Police seized a dozen marijuana plants. The plants will not be returned because such processing of marijuana is a crime regardless of status under the state's medical marijuana law, Dixon said at police headquarters.

Information about the butane canister was not released.

Dixon said the case is under investigation but concern rests on the man who was severely injured.

"He's fighting for his life right now," Dixon said.

Police also found aquariums and plastic containers with fish but it was not certain if they had any connection to the grow operation. Dixon said the fish died as a result of the house fire.

When he got caught with brownies, and told po po it was made with oil it screwed us all who use oil as an edible or smokable,,,,I wouldnt use oill to make butter like the articles says would you?  I make butter with the same sugar leaf and small buddz I make oil with, the difference is making butter is no more dangerious than frying a few eggs!

when the coa makes a neg ruling for us, leo enforces it whether it is in our law or not.

 

Kinda like the have to keep it in a box out of reach of driver (trunk or back of vehicle with no trunk), that isnt in our law, but people are being arrested for ilegal transport because of it!

 

I dont think I misread anything where a pt or c.g is being arrested on some of these add on's that we did not vote for.

Doesn't matter to an ignorant hater cop if you made it with oil or whatever. It's illegally process marijuana. They just use the butane factor to drive it home. Put a little stank on their bad pitch.

I mix bho into some peanut butter and put it on an english muffin, I also use cannabutter the same way, but I use cannabutter on many more things, noodles and cannabutter, cannabutter on hash browns, and just about anything I would use butter on.

 

I dont do any baking of cookies or brownies with the butter,  Im happy using it the way I do, plus im on a constant diet lol!

 

I find that dosing the way I do usualy last's a couple days, I mostly use edibles with oil or butter every other day, it seems to work for pain for at least 2 days, If I want to sleep better on the 2nd nite I just smoke me some buddz!

It would be just like if you mixed BHO with the butter. You would use such a tiny amount per serving it's hard to taste it.

yes very true!  unfortunatly, we can add disgruntled pt, and im sure many others that want something for nothing, or just plain jeliousy!
