On Jan 4th the state put out the new statistics on the medical marijuana program.

Independent interactive statistics on the MMMA

This is a project we put together- the largest sampling of Michigan Medical Marijuana patients not controlled by the state. Just a little bonus to the community. Interesting to see the difference between what the state reports and what we see.

The statistics will be updated live. This is already the largest collection of data outside the state controlled database. There are already several thousand data points. Patients are reported by age, zip code and condition. There is no patient identifiable information in database, just basic demographics.

Furthermore, this data will be on a 2 year cycle, so once we have a full cycle entered, we will avoid the problems with the on-year, off-year differences in patient registrations.  When we have the data, we will publish an estimate of total registrations in real time.  We hope to have up to 15-20,000 datapoints represented over each 2 year period, which is a significant sampling of the total registrations.  We currently have about 5,000 out of 180-190,000 total so it is a relatively small, but significant, sampling.

Key features-

  • Average age is in the 45-54 age group, not 24 as is often reported in the media.
  • Differences between the percentages for each condition between our data and the state data (PTSD is underreported by the state, so is cancer and several other conditions).
  • Age distributions for each condition (not available on state data).

Several are scary.  We are not reaching patient suffering from conditions that cannabis may help.  I've previously written about our need to get information about cannabis into the HIV, Cancer, Glaucoma and other populations.  I don't think the statistics show HIV is rising in younger patients, I think it reflects which of the HIV patients are getting the word about cannabis.

It is a good wake up call to spread the word about cannabis not just to pain patients (they are coming) but to folks with specific diseases that are not being told about this option.

I would suspect alot of these people already use marijuanna, and just dont want to register with the state. I had an hiv patient registered to me for a few years that i met through this forum. I met other people though him with hiv, that didnt want to register out of fear it would have a negative impact or completely cut off access to there pharmacueticals.

Thank you Dr. Bob

We are not reaching patient that we can help by letting them know how to stay out of the Court system ether but i keep trying

still, not so bad Bob, its only a small fraction like 1% of the registrants that end up in court. Maybe they dont know how to read, or dont have internet access, or maybe they just dont care until its too late. I see alot of goofs in court, over and over, sometimes for the same offense. Once someone makes up their mind that they are allowed to drive with buds in their pocket, or sell to more than their five patients, or open a dispensary......its tough to make them examine beyond their personal choices. Too bad stupid cant be fixed
