ive been converted, praise ja. tops are necessary. i was present for a detroit disp inspection, and others were present. as the officers left they told the owner:

and if you grow in the back this year, make sure u put a top on it.

his partner explained, we got a memo from wayne (county) sherrif saying this year, no top outdoor, its a bust.

so im in detroit, and im persuaded. i gotta lay a top. clear 6 mil plastic?

greenhouse film?

i already know that ill string taut wires from 4x4 to 4x4 in my 8' wood panel fence perimeter, to lay the sheets on and wire it to.

whats the best covering to use?

best covering?    =  the one you have on hand will do fine. Plastic Solar Panel greenhouse panels are the best, I used white corrugated with awesome results...but you wont use those. Visquine in a pinch, greenhouse film if you got the dough.

Just put something on top to prevent fat cops from reaching in.

I used chicken wire on my first outdoor grow,my second grow I spent less money. Put posts in the ground, 2x4 frame and bought the concrete wire panels 4ft.x8ft., panels on the sides(screwed or nailed down) and panels on top tie wired together.

I think the 'bar' is being secure. The prison yard doesn't have a top. It's a secure enclosure. I'm sick and tired of cops acting like they decide what is legal arbitrarily just to act like they are in control of everything. Every outdoor grow will have to be assessed on it's own merits. That's where you will be when/if you go to court. You could have a shabby POS enclosure with a top and have it not be secure. And then you could have a nice secure enclosure without a top, like a prison yard. This isn't a game of keeping the local cops happy. This is serious business that needs to conform to the words of the Act, not Detroit Police.

soon as legal outdoor spaces were defined I understood them to include four sides and a top, attached to the ground, with a locked entrance.  some fencing, some chicken wire, some pallets, wtvr, it seemed simple enough to me.    now, about that dang smell escaping .....that's my kink

How did you come to this understanding? I think you might need to educate about a billion people they are wrong with their semantics. Lots of enclosures out there without a top. 'Secure' doesn't actually dictate a top. Nothing dictates a top other than dictators.
