Number Of Plants Vs. Lighting?

As I put together the long "grocery list" of items needed for my up and coming project, I am still unsure as to how many plants I would like to grow. What I do know is, I would like to utilize my entire area to its fullest potential. (Maximum number of plants for my space) With this being said....

-In a 8x10 room, (working space considered) how many plants would I be able to efficiently grow?

-How many lights are needed for this ideal setup? (I'll save my questions about the different types of lighting for another thread :) )

-Lastly, based upon the figure below (Shout out to Solabeirtan :)) ), how many lights would I then need? Veg and Bud?

Thanks in advance for the replies. Your knowledge is valued and greatly appreciated.

4 plants to every light works out right,, 1k bulbs.was my choice,, I did my room originally divided in half, one wall centered the long way, made a row of 3 1k lights and put 12 plants under that for flowering. 4 per light. with a foot between them to walk in-between ( your gonna want that access).. the other side also  @ the time was mounted 2, 400w beside each other for veg.@8 plants, . again 4 per light. that allowed me to change oiut  plants after every harvest.. in perpetual. ... plus the footprint for 1k bulbs is 5 ft square.. give or take, my room was a little bigger, it was 12x14, so i had some leg room, however i upped production and ran 24 perpetual in flower. and changed out 8 plants from veg to flower monthly.. I really over estimated my needs... finally i took over a 8x10 room added a 1k bulb and a 400w for vegging, 12 plants at a time , plus my 8 place cloner to produce clones to fill the veg pots as they moved over to flower.. my production was totally up to snuff.. since then I have cut waaaaay back , to be safe and legal. it can and does get away from you LOL ,, gallery_16026_570_17826.jpg

Scrog for ultimate effiency lol, really it comes down to how many plants you can have. More smaller plants usually results in faster or more harvests per year, but isnt really a viable

Option for our state, legally speaking. 4 plants vegged for about 21-25 days and toos spread out through a tight screen, growing only for the tops.

I'll second willy on the 4 per light, but in between my lights I sneak in an extra 2. Some sativas also get added to the outskirts. I have 1600w going and average 10-12 plants at a time (mind you it is a perpetual, so some space hasn't filled out). You'll lose steam after 45 around each light. I think your space is perfect for two 600 watters.

I once measured my refelctors, transposed the dimensions to the floor, and added two feet to the area. It's worked well for me

I'll second the two six hundred watters for your flower area with four plants under each one. The advantage of 1000 watt lights is that they penetrate lower branches better so you will get better production off lower branches. I just trim the lower branches off about 1/3 of the way up the plant. Plants can grow closer to 600 watt lights - a consideration if you have low ceilings.

I used to put plants directly under the lights thinking that blasting them with the most light possible would be best. I found that this is not the case. The plants on the edge of the light footprint did better. I avoid putting plants directly under the lights unless I can keep the light about 3 feet above the plant. This is with 600 watt lights BTW.

Muchas gracias, my good man. Thanks for the run down. It helps give me a better understanding of the "light-to plant-to area" ratio. Much appreciated.

Nice bud, btw!!

Thanks for the visual!! And nice setup!!

In growing only for the tops, is there a certain technique used for the trimming? Does this cause extra stress/damage to the plant? How is the top portion of the plant effect by this process?

Sorry for the long list of questions, but I'm intrigued. :D

Thanks for the tips. In trimming 1/3 of the way up the plant, does this cause any adverse effects to the other 2/3 of the plant? If so, any special steps needed to counteract this? How far from the top of the plant would you recommend keeping a 1000 watt light?

Thanks again for your help.

no adverse effects to the plant, unless nothing but big, dense flower tops is considered adverse. Lol...that particualr square is about 3 weeks into flower, i kind of over did it, as in i have the tops a little to densely packedd into that 4.5x4. As for trimming, i cut all

The lowers off as it grows, and then once its in the screen, i cut everything off below the screen, and then about two weeks in ill cut anything else that i might of missed or doesnt seem like it should be there, a little light pruning of some of the larger leaves above the screen and done. This is only my 2nd scrog..so i probably am not doing it as efficiently as possible yet.

Sweet!! How do you determine where to place your screen?

Normally people like to veg them into the screen, i have not done that yet, because ill need to build a moveable fixture for the plants and screen. I just built a frame out of pvc that matched my lights foot print and attached the screen to it using zip ties. As for hieght, i have opted to make the screen frame taller and just raise the plants up with plant holders or milk crates to the desired hieght. I simply just top the plant repeatetly to get many top shoots to weave through the screen.

I trim the lower branches because most of the time all they produce is tiny buds only suitable for the trim box. People say that doing this results in bigger buds up top, but I haven't noticed a big difference.

I would keep plants under a 1000 watt light at least 3 feet from the light. Plants on the edge can be closer because the brunt of the lights power will fall on lower branches. The light directly beneath an HID lamp is powerful. Much more than these plants need.

The most popular lights in Amsterdam (where a lot of strains are developed) are the 400 and 600 watters. Not many people use 1000 watt lights. That appears to be an American thing. A lot of the strains coming out of Amsterdam are apparently bred to perform well under low light conditions.

Duly noted. Thanks again.

I take the lower branches for clones if its a desired strain and I defoliate the plant plucking fan leaves that shade lower bud sites I also use twine to bring those lower buds closer to the lamps makes the plant look like a bouquet of flowers.

Using the lower branches for clones sounds like a good idea. I couldn't help but feel wasteful if I were to just cut and chuck them all.
