BIRMINGHAM– Since it was launched last year, Michigan’s organization for attorneys specializing in cannabis law has grown to become the largest of its kind in the nation. The Marijuana Law Section of the Michigan Bar Association (MLS) is hosting a social event in hopes of recruiting even more members.

Nearly 400 criminal defense attorneys, judges and prosecutors have already registered to join the MLS. “We are the most successful organization of our kind,” said MLS Chair, Lapeer criminal defense attorney Bernard Jocuns of Jocuns Law.IMG_3521-281x500.jpg

Attorneys and others will gather in Ferndale at the Bosco Cafe and Dessert Lounge from 5 – 9PM. The event is hosted by the Kirsch Leach and Associates firm in Birmingham, Michigan, is open to the public and was spearheaded by Bruce Leach, a Genesee County attorney.

“The MLS was created to further the education of attorneys and judges on cannabis issues in our community,” Leach told TCC. “The more members we can attract, the more we can make meaningful progress by creating better laws and case rulings for the legal cannabis industry.”

The mixer is set for July 7, and is just the first in a series of promotional events leading up to a grand reception later in the year.

“I am elated to announce the first in a series of social mixers for the Marihuana Law Section of the State bar of Michigan leading up to the First Annual Training and Seminar at Firekeepers Casino in Battle Creek, Michigan, October 21-23,” Jocuns told TCC. “This is a great opportunity to connect with other lawyers that practice different aspects of Marijuana Law in Michigan. The event has already sparked a lot of interest in a short period of time and will be a lot of fun. This event is also a membership drive and all lawyers are welcome to check things out and hopefully join our growing section that is approaching 400 members in our first year.”

The need for education among judges, lawmakers and prosecutors is strong; Michigan’s cannabis laws are frequently misinterpreted by lower Courts and the Appellate Judges in Michigan.MICBD-photos-2-1024x683-500x333.jpg

“There is a great disconnect between the theoretical statutes written by ignorant politicians and the real world application and operation of the cannabis community,” Leach said. “The MLS members are dedicated to fixing this serious problem through better legal argument and representation of our clients.”

“We are proud of our presence in our inaugural year and are grateful that the Kirsch Leach Law Firm are co-hosting the kickstart event,” Jocuns said.

There may be a remote broadcast of the Planet Green Trees Radio Showfrom the venue. The PGT Show has been Michigan’s long-standing voice for the pro-patient perspective in all things related to marijuana and is hosted by another MLS principal, Southfield attorney Michael Komorn. Jocuns took to the airwaves on Thursday June 30 to explain the need for the event. You can listen at THIS LINK or by using the player below.
