Heirloom Tomatoes

My maters have gone nuts! Anyone else growing tomatoes this year?

I've decided to grow cherokee, black cherry, garden peach, black krim, pineapple, and Amish paste.

Garden peach is a slow fruiting plant that hasn't even ripened yet. It's looking like 90 days for that sob. I'm not a huge fan of yellow tomatoes, but the novelty caught my attention. Who wouldn't want a little fuzzy peach tomato? Pineapple is the best tomato I've ever sampled with cherokee close behind.

Does anyone notice that the farmers market or store just calls them all heirlooms? I'm thinking that I ought to show those Amish guys how it's done! Anywho, end 'mater rant.

Oh yeah, we got some Purple Cherokees and they are great! Great slicing tomato with not too much juice, so I'm surprised at Wet's Cherokees (maybe it just takes after your name). Tiger Stripe starting to come in, they're a favorite also. But even the common stuff (Early Girl, 4th of July) are mucho good from the garden, specially compared to the store bought stuff (which I avoid like the plague except when it's out of season and I'm jonesing for a tomato addition to a sammich!) I'm not super big on cherries, but the Millefiore are very prolific (like their name.)

The cucumber this year however, seems to be yellow.??

Over the last few years we haven't done well with curcubits except for the big squashes like butternut. Wilt and cucumber beetles have taken their toll. But at least before they get sick there are plenty of leaves that can be eaten.

Oh, and the basil is wimpy this year. That's disappointing as we like to make & freeze a bunch of pesto.

My basil is fantastic this year. A basil bush. The biggest factor this year is it's in 5 gallon buckets and I can move it out of that scorching sun. Already have some pesto in the freezer. Oh, the Michigan blueberries are great too. I think I could live on blueberries and pesto.

And the little pickles are good too, even the nubs.

blueberries and pesto only! I'd be on the can all day!! Lol. Okay too much info. Purple and thai basil are doing great here too. I have them in buckets as well. Starting to notice some splits in the maters. This summer has been a bear!

I think we planted the basil late (grown from seed) and didn't do enough watering as it went to seed much too early. Last year was a bumper basil crop and I still have some frozen pesto pucks but I may have to rely on a farmers market to resupply.
