Lansing — A state business development board unanimously approved Tuesday more than $34.8 million for out-of-state multinational advertising and public relations companies to do state marketing efforts including the Pure Michigan campaign.

The Michigan Strategic Fund approved the firms and dollar amounts with no debate. In the past, Democrats have sometimes criticized Republican Gov. Rick Snyder’s administration and appointees for contracting out state work to out-of-state companies.

The contracts included $25.2 million for McCann Erickson, a New York-based advertising agency with offices in more than 120 countries, to run the marketing and advertising campaign for Pure Michigan for one year, starting Sept. 1 and running through Sept. 30, 2017.

The one-year contract — which lawyers still have to finalize — can be renewed four more times, according to state documents. McCann Erickson has an office in Birmingham.

“We are excited to continue working with the team that created the award-winning and industry-leading Pure Michigan brand 10 years ago,” Michigan Economic Development Corp. spokeswoman Emily Gerkin Guerrant said in a Tuesday email.

“The teams at both Weber Shandwick Detroit and McCann Detroit have been excellent partners in our efforts to promote and market Michigan and bring their own passion for this state to the job every day. With more than 800 total employees in the state, both firms are strong in-state partners that have years of experience working in Michigan.”

The Michigan Strategic Fund also approved an additional $7.5 million for McCann Erickson to run the marketing and advertising efforts for “business marketing campaigns” for the same one-year time period, which can also be renewed four more times after lawyers finalize the contract.

Another $2.1 million will go to New York-based public relations firm Weber Shandwick to run public relations media relations and social media campaigns for “business development” and “community development” projects for the same one-year term. The company also has an office in Birmingham.

In 2012, the Strategic Fund board approved a three-year contract to Des Moines-based Meredith Corp. to produce the glossy “Pure Michigan” travel guide magazine three times each year. It approved another three-year contract worth $1.55 million annually in 2015.

In 2013, Democrat Mark Schauer tried to make the Iowa contract a big outsourcing issue in his failed attempt to oust Snyder.

McCann-Erikson is an long time General Motors advertising agency that lost out when GM went belly up. Michigan was their largest office outside NYC.    My guess is they promised to beef up their Michigan office.   That said, most of what they did was pretty boring.  If I recall correctly, they were Oldsmobile's advertising agency.

Should be a MI company, it isn't going to make much difference who is doing it, and why send money out of state when we need the jobs here.

But, if they legalize and tax recreational, that could pay for the pure michigan ads...

I dunno, like "pot for pot holes"... if cannabis should  pay for those things any more than viagra or mcdonalds does?

Wasn't actually serious, just saying the state would have more tax revenue...

might be better than current.....right now we get "taxed" by LARA and that money goes towards locating, robbing and arresting those that are taxed.  I'd rather it go towards feeding hungry kids,  clean drinking water in Flint, prosecuting the piles of fleecing politicians and officials plaguing our state.

Will 34 million  bring in 34 million new dollars to Michigan this year?  I doubt it. Waste of money.

Its a good thing  you are not part of our tourism team than!

Three thoughts here on hiring a NYC firm...

One, the majority of the dollars are for advertising, not the firm managing the $.  Due to the very nature of tourism advertising, most of the actual dollars are spent out of state.

Two, perhaps other states should not buy fords and chevy's for their fleets since GM and Ford are out of state.   Honda's for government employees in Ohio, Subaru's for Mike Pence and company.  Maybe Toyota trucks for the folks in Texas.

Three, the people actually doing the management are in Birmingham, not NYC,  and they have been doing it now for 12 years.

Lots of Chevy trucks are made in Indiana.

We don't need to send our tax dollars out of state for a " PURE MICHIGAN " campaign now do we?

The secret is out , good water, beautiful forests , fertile farmland , relatively mild weather, a trained and seasoned work force. Excellent University's , great cities, A great place to raise a family, the list goes on and on. Michigan has a lot to offer

Thanks to the republican majority here in Michigan, we got nowhere to go but up from here.

Invest in yourself and others will start investing in you.
