Signature Collection To Legalize Marijuana Begins This Week!

It's really happening! The Michigan Board of Canvassers approved our petitions for a state ballot initiative that would regulate marijuana like alcohol. Petitions distribution will begin in the coming days. The Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol (CRMLA) now has 180 days to collect just over 250,000 valid signatures needed to place the issue on the Nov. 2018 ballot.

If approved by voters, Michigan would become a national leader in cannabis reform by:

  • Legalizing personal possession, cultivation and use of cannabis for adults 21 and older;
  • Legalizing the cultivation of industrial hemp;
  • Licensing cannabis businesses that cultivate, process, test, transport and sell marijuana;
  • Protecting consumers with proper testing and safety regulations for retail cannabis; and
  • Taxing cannabis at retail levels with a 10 percent excise tax and 6 percent sales tax, which will support K-12 public schools, roads and local governments.

Full details of the initiative are available at RegulateMI.org. Sign up to volunteer for our signature collection efforts at RegulateMI.org/join.

The Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol is managing the campaign including overseeing the paid petition circulation being done by National Petition Management. If you are interested in supporting the campaign or being paid to circulate petitions this summer, please contact info@regulatemi.org for more details about how to help.

CRMLA is also coordination petition distribution for volunteer signature collection with supportive organizations including MILegalize. If you have not yet signed up to volunteer with MILegalize, please do so at www.milegalize.com. If coordinating with a different supportive organization is a better fit for you, please email info@regulatemi.org for more information.

Thank you for your help in ending cannabis prohibition in Michigan!

- Lissa Satori, Director of Outreach

P.S. Once you signed up to volunteer, donate to the campaign and help us win in November! Donations made directly to the Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol help cover campaign costs like qualifying for the ballot and an aggressive media and grassroots campaign to win in November of 2018.

Good Morning Michigan!

I know everyone is more than anxious and perhaps a little confused about petition distribution and the launch of the signature gathering drive. I'm hoping this post answers most of the questions we've received:

CRMLA is in the process of printing all of the petitions that will be circulated. The coalition will announce an actual day that we can begin gathering signatures. Because of the 180 day rule, it is very important that we do not have "early stragglers", even if some people may have petitions in hand prior to the actual start date.

We are waiting on one piece of the puzzle that we had hoped to have resolved by now to fall into place before we can start distribution. Once the start date is set/announced, I will coordinate with supportive organizations including MILegalize to get petitions to their volunteers. If you are a leader of a group that is not a good fit to work with MILegalize and you want to work independently, please email lissa@regulatemi.org with the following information:

Name of Organization, address, and phone # of contact person, and number of members.
I will make a separate post with information about where to apply for paid signature gathering jobs in the coming days. Thanks for your patience everyone!
