High Times Cannabis Cup In Michigan This Weekend

This weekend the Michigan medical marijuana industry will be taking over the Auto City Speedway in Clio for the annual Midwest Cannabis Cup.

The event is going on its fourth year in Michigan and is hosted by the iconic counterculture magazine High Times. According to promotional material, the two-day expo is an opportunity for medical marijuana users to test out new strains of cannabis and for dispensaries to show off their goods.

In addition to trying out marijuana-related swag, attendees have the chance to catch various artists in concert such as 50 Cent, Wu-Tang Clan, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Atmosphere, Danny Brown, Devin the Dude, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic and Nelly.

High Times, which was sold earlier this month for $42 million to a Los Angeles-based investment fund that counts Damien Marley as one of its principals, has been sponsoring Cannabis Cups since 1988. That year, magazine editor Steven Hager hosted a cannabis variety competition in Amsterdam.

The tradition carried on, exclusively in the Netherlands, until 2010 when the magazine decided to branch out and try its hand at a stateside marijuana-bash. In the states, there are two types of cannabis fests, a Medical Cannabis Cup in states like Michigan with medical marijuana laws and a Cannabis Cup in states like Colorado, where marijuana is legal for all.

While previous entries for the Midwest event were open to state-licensed cultivation and dispensary businesses at large, the rules this year state that submissions must be limited to companies licensed in Michigan.

"There will be NO out-of-state submissions allowed due to the fact the federal government has the authority to regulate interstate commerce. Thus, they can prosecute individuals for transporting cannabis across state lines, even from one legal state to another," promotional material for the event states.

For those without a medical marijuana license but looking to partake in the weekend festivities? The event's website says people can apply for a medical marijuana license on site.

$40 for wu-tang is worth it all day long. WU TANG WU TANG WU TANG

but uh. its a trip at the cup. theres nothing like it. NOTHING.

hard to describe what its like. its very busy, so if you dont like crowds, dont go.

look at the vendor list. are the businesses in the vendor list ones you would like to visit?

its set up in a race track. so theres a large loop of ashphault that you walk around, with many many booths selling everything they have.

then theres bleachers to sit on, a large stage for music and speakers. a large tent for speakers or just to chill under the shade.

you can check out some of the videos from last year , or from other cups in other states on youtube.

heres a video that shows what its like:

bring your beards and your bikinis, its hot out there.

WHOA that screenshot was not there when i posted the video last night! whoaaaaaaa

May have been my last cannabis cup.  Had to park in a muddy field.  Took over an hour to get in and I even met someone tehre who had been standing in line and saved me a place. Took over 1/2 hour to get to teh place after stopped traffic at 1 mile down Dort Highway.  Would've taken longer if I hadn't taken teh right lane past the traffic back up to get to the other lot, which didn't have a line.  Both entrances converged into one bridge to get to overflow parking in a field with corn cob stubs still in it.  And parking went up to $15 this year and the people taking money were volunteers, don't know if they paid anyone to assist parking

Couldn't hear friends right next to me while in the speedway area or overflow vending.  Packed all the way around.  They've started to make it a cash grab.  No t-shirts with the VIP pass and no swag bag.

When I decided to leave about 430, cars were still out to the road backed up waiting to get in.  Took 1/2 hour to get out of teh lot because all roads were still trying to take people in and there was no way to get out.

Highlight was using a pneumatic press to squash some buds to oil.  Space Glue(GG#4 hermied and pollinated a female Space Dawg).  The most incredible dab I've ever had.  Gave the rest to Droman because it was a little too much for me.  Felt like I was trippin tryin to walk thru all those people afterwards. I'm definitely getting a press though.  Lack of heat and the incredible return I got are teh reasons.  Will save money on solvent also but the taste was out of this world.  That's the main reason.  Seems to be much easier than running iso and boiling off and finishing.  And again, the return from 3 small buds was amazing.  I'm sold now I just gotta research which one I want.  the 6 or 8 ton press is about 3k.  Not interested in spending that much but I'll have to see what the return is on the smaller ones.

I may end up skipping the cup and just doing the country fairs from here out.

I went on Sat. Other then the rosin press comment, I totally agree with your experience. The start times were screwed up, local staff didn't know bunny muffin. I had three maybe four different workers telling me what line to go to. Round and round waiting an hour to get in, etc. etc.

No map of the layout of booths, no list of vendors, the Sat. seminars were nothing, every other booth was blasting music so loud you COULDN'T hear the person next to you.

The biggest disappointed for me was there wasn't any seminars about our MMMA, the new laws, the new licenses (dispensaries, growers, etc.). This was a lost opportunity for those who know to bring everyone up to speed.

There were individual booths for MiLeagalize and the Regulate Marihauna like Alcohol group. Why? They both had the same petitions. This was confusing people. Also, why didn't these groups have an informational seminar to promote, recruit and explain the legalization efforts? All in all a waste of my time and dollars. The one good thing: lots of free dabs!

This was probably my last cup. Maybe I'm just getting to old ...

So this was my first (possibly last) Cannabis Cup. Pretty much $55 ($15 to park and $40 to get in) 3.5hrs round trip drive time and almost an hour waiting in traffic to get in and out of the crappy muddy parking lot to buy seeds. I was so disappointed in selection. Sure there were dozens or hundreds of strains available but they were like 90+% house strains. Stuff I've never heard of and when googled only came up with results from the company selling the seeds. Ie; not much info or reviews

A couple of vendors kinda talked down to me because I was trying to buy only feminized seeds because I don't have time or space to pop beans that are males. Basiclly was told that feminized are not natural and that I needed to try regulars.

No maps or vendor lists. I wanted to try to find S.E. Michigan vendors so that if I found what I wanted I could keep buying from them.

It felt like it was just a huge hash bash with some vendors. I don't know what I was really expecting but it was not what I had hoped it would be.

Back to the seeds, since I couldn't get everything fem I did pick up some regulars. I'll just have to be extra careful with timing and start a few. Kill the males and clone the females so that I can plan a full grow.
