What do you mean by "free-root trellis system"? Trellis is obviously the netting for support or training, but "free-root"? Mediumless DWC?

It becomes a free root system when you abandon buckets all together and simply place the rockwool cubes with the veggies in them directly in the flood table on top of the hydrotin balls (also referred to as "expanded clay palates"). So the plants can never become root bound...they just grow yummy white roots all over the table and around each other.

And yes, you're right, the trellis is the net that keeps the plants up. If you use buckets in that system, then its just a trellis system, not free-root.
